We were at a dinner party with friends quite awhile ago and she was married to a German man who dressed like a slob. His friends came to dinner and they were way over dressed. He wore a suit and tie and his wife wore a dress. Why? It was just a casual dinner with friends.
I guess that's one of the things I love about America: there is no standard uniform, so you can be dressed nice without having to actually get dressed up. I like living in a culture where jeans and sandals are just as appropriate as a native costume for most day-to-day occasions. Don't like it? Then wear whatever the hell you want and the rest of us will do the same.
I am California boy from the 50s
I wear tennis shoes, Black levis, black T shirt ,every day .
Reason , I have been a mechanic most of my life working on machinery all kinds of machinery ,and staying pretty is not one of my priorities . I get 100% into my work and it rubs off.
I start clean, but that's not how I came home at night .
I have come to the conclusion that wearing something other then who I really am, is a false front.
If I were a farmer, I'd wear bib overalls every day ,yes even in church , that's what I am .
If I were an office worker then a suit is appropriate all the time . IMO (except doing chores not normally appropriate for good clothing).
I am not rich, so wearing expensive clothes is a false front, I don't wish to do.
I don't even wear a watch or ring, they are not safe, working on machinery.
Face it they only attract attention of the baser sort.
Those whom are attracted to the gold, are not attracted to you.
IMO
So you wear that to a funeral in a church? That makes the day about you instead of the recently departed, same if you wore it to a wedding to draw attention away from the bride. Sometimes you dress the part like it or not.

(Seriously, what's wrong with Ralph Lauren?)
Can't be nothing wrong with Ralph as most of my wardrobe consists of Ralph Lauren
I'm sorry loner I feel your pain, but they dress horribly. What is with the men wearing bright red shoes that match a red shirt? Ack. Over here, I haven't seen over there. And the godawful hair styles, gold chains, watches. Nobody wears a watch anymore. If I was a scammer I would only hear that you are susceptible to manipulation if done correctly
Red shoes are great and so are watches. Almost everyone I know still wears a watch so you saying that nobody wears one is a bit ridiculous. Stop generalizing.
I lived in France for a while and one thing I noticed upon my return to the US is that some people dress like crap here. Ugly, ratty t-shirts, shorts, and sandals with gross toe nails.
Also, the men who are in "your dad's" age group (45-65) tend to wear shorts, a t-shirt, tall white socks, and sneakers. It's the most American
I've seen some trashy looking Europeans, but not as many as Americans.
Personally, I would like to get caught by the European fashion police. I don't dress very well. (I mean, I'm a slob worthy of one of those outlandish makeover shows.) I dress like I don't care. I do care, but I just don't seem to have enough money, time, or good taste to make myself look "normal." Often, I look like I don't care. That's bad for anyone who needs to make a good impression on a future boss, friends, or co-workers. I also have ASD, so social skills don't always come naturally. Looking bad also doesn't help my cause. I guess some, maybe most, people can just look over it, but I wonder what I'm saying to those people who just think that what they see is what really is. If they see a woman with matted hair, a dirty T shirt, and an old long skirt, for instance, do they automatically think, "homeless? druggie? slob?" I guess I don't care about it that much, but not having enough money to make myself fit in does kind of add to my depression. I feel, rightly I guess, like an outcast.
I have lived in America for almost a decade now after moving from Europe. Where I come from nearly everyone is dressed up well, fashionably and basically dress up and look very nice - both men and women - probably 90% of the people. When I started high school, then college and now the work force here in the states, I always get comment from people how well and nicely dressed I am and some people assume I have a party or an event. However, at the beginning some people thought I was "gay" because I wear skinny pants /slim fit sometimes, etc.
In America I noticed only about 20-30% of the population dress up nicely, or at least good. Why is there big dress code difference? Sure, if you go to many urban places like NYC you see many people wearing nice clothes and also more common among Asian and Hispanic population (esp. males). Not everything should be about comfortability.
Many stores in America have those European style type of clothing and plenty of choices and options here, and indeed sales tax and clothing are in general much more affordable and cheaper in America so no excuses. Nobody asks you to buy expensive goods; indeed, H&M and Forever 21 are two examples of stores are affordable and nice things. What shocks me the most are especially women wearing gym clothes when shopping, and males wearing baggy pants or too much unmatched colors, big ties and wide shirts. Gym clothes belongs to gym or at home, not out in the malls, grocery stores, etc.
Sorry if anyone gets offended; not saying Europeans are better but when it comes to style and fashion, most of Europe wins on this. You can easily spot a European tourist on the street anywhere in America.
I think it is a female issue, not both genders.
In Europe you can spot an American man immediately - shorts, sneakers and a buttoned shirt and usually a nice hair cut.
American women ... not so much. Yoga or pajama pants, belly hanging over the pants, and clothes that don't match. Gym clothes outside of the gym is the norm. I think it is because
a) lots of women have children and work full time - no time to dress nicely to run errands.
b) lots of women are single moms - no time to dress nicely to run errands
c) In the US you are less likely to run into people you know when you just run errands. if you live in a little town in Italy and go to the only store in your pajamas, the whole town will gossip.
d) lots of Americans are overweight and gym clothes stretch ... no need to buy new pants every time you gain a few lbs.
