This is something I've noticed for the past couple of years and I just don't get it. I'm talking about those plugs I have seen many young women (and even men) get and...I personally think they are pretty ugly. No offense if you have them but I see so many young people with holes (!) in their ears and many really stretched out and I just don't get it. Seems as if it's rare to see young women with just normal earrings anymore. My daughter has never worn them and I am quite happy about that.

I'm talking about these:

But often I see them much larger and frankly it grosses me out. I hardly think of them as "earrings" even if it's technically what they are.

Something more like this is what my daughter and I usually wear:

The first pair you posted are fake plugs. The hole is normal size, its just supposed to look like they're stretched.

The second pair looks like the ones my grandma wears.

Fake plugs are fine, the real ones challenge my ability to look at them. It's not just women, in fact, I see far more of the real plugs on men than women around here. The women tend to go for the standard stud earrings plus 1-2 more in other places on the ear. Rarely as many as in this pic, but 2-3 of them.

Plenty of women wear regular earrings. I see women with gauges fairly often, but only on a specific type of person, if that makes sense. The kind of woman with gauges wouldn't be caught dead with the sparkly diamonds, unless it was ironic.

Plugs have come and gone in terms of being uber popular again. They are still popular today sure and I still see them plenty, but rewind 6,7,8 years ago maybe and they had a huge boom in popularity. I see them much, much, less frequently on both guys and girls today than I did in the middle of the last decade.

I call the damn things 'grommets' because that's what they look like to me.

Where I live I've noticed that the fad has tapered a bit. I still occasionally see someone with their lobes scretched around a 2-3" grommet. Eeeeeewwwww!!!!!

Tons of people wear earrings (as opposed to gauges).

Yeah I don't get that, do they not realize not only how damaging it is to their ear but when they get older they're going to have some ugly looking droopy ears? Ick! I remember I was out shopping with my daughter looking at earrings and she told me how much she hated those plugs and boy was I happy. Considering how her bf is, like her quite conservative and has said how much he loves the way she looks/dresses I very much doubt he likes them either.

Where do you see this? It was popular in the80's and 90's when I was a teen. Now in this area it's the big studs. Usually pretty owls, hearts, snakes, diamond clusters, flowers, stars, elephants, arrows, and the infinity symbol.

They are still "popular" among the self-proclaimed "hipsters" around Deep South Texas/Northern Mexico & have been for the past few years. Usually the same people who have multiple bad tattoos. And menial jobs. Never saw them at all in the 80s & 90s anywhere.
