Hey everyone, I'm faced with a dilemma and need some recommendations.

I'm going to a co-worker's wedding. The dress code is "black tie optonal." I own a tuxedo, but my boyfriend (who's my date to the wedding) does not. We're not going to rent one for him either, because.. no. So he'll likely wear a dark suit with a dark neck tie. Since he won't be in a tux, I feel that I shouldn't wear mine, because we'd be a total mismatch. But I don't want to just wear one of my normal suit/neck tie combos. My coworker sees me wear suits to work all the time. I want to show I've put a little effort in.

So I'm thinking of just wearing my black suit with a shirt and black bow tie, and my date can wear his black suit with a dark neck tie. Would we look silly together if I show up dressed like this:*

And he's looking more like this:*

I don't think we need to be matchey-matchey, but I feel we shouldn't be on different planets with our looks either. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks!

*you can add about 10 years and 30 lbs onto each to get the actual picture of what we'd look like

I'd wear the suit. If you're going as a couple, look like a couple. Wearing the tux would be a bit much in this situation.

I agree you don't need to wear a tux. That is nice though you want to look like you put more effort into your outfit. I think both pictures of how you both would dress look very nice. People have their own styles but it flows together nice.

I agree on wearing the suit, you two would look mismatched if you were in a tux.

I also agree on not wearing the tux. The suits sound perfect.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. We're going for the suits, and we'll both wear bow ties (Macy's has them on sale this weekend, so bf picked one up).
