I maintain that sandals and flip-flops are a satan-inspired disease in the realm of footwear, yet this is, to be honest, coming from someone who's comfortable in Doc Martins during the peak of an August heatwave (and this person doesn't require shorts under such circumstances, either).
My husband won't wear either. When I met him he wouldn't wear shorts, either - only jeans. I did convince him to wear shorts and now he will only wear jeans if it is really cold. He wears shorts sometimes when it's in the 40s. But I haven't been able to convince him that sandals or flip flops would be so much more comfortable than socks and tennis shoes. I voted that either are fine.
Seems that there are two schools of thought (for those who are not anti-sandals):
1) Flip flops are for the beach and sandals are for everything else.
2) Sandals are for dressier/formal events and flip flops are for everything else.
Hmmm I was thinking of trying the flip flops but will probably just stick with the sandals.
I used to wear gym shoes but don't think I can go back at this point, sandals are just too damn comfortable. I've gotten compliments from some ladies so I will continue to wear them.
I think people should wear what they want but personally I don't care for either unless you are young. The average man though flip flopping around looks less put together to me for some reason then running around with gym shoes. Possibly it is how one walks in a flip flop. Also the condition of ones feet and toes.

I don't get the flip flop hate. Around here pretty much everyone male or female wears them in the summer. Sandals too, but too a lesser extent. Either are fine, imo. If you want to look old and outdated, you could go the socks/tennis shoes one-two punch.
