You're right. There was the article by Samantha Bricks, who had blonde hair and blue eyes, she claimed that she was so beautiful that it made most women incredibly jealous. She also had many male admirers who offered her lavish gifts and money.

the public response was that she was not even pretty, just below average. However, she has blonde hair and blue eyes...must be the prestige associated with having those attributes

I don't think Samantha Bricks is an example of a blonde hair and blue eyes outshining an otherwise unremarkable face, I think she's an example of just how far being delusional can get you in life. Convince yourself you're god's gift to men and back that up with the kind actions of a few horny men and you're set.

It's actually not a bad strategy until you declare your perfection to the internet. Then you better be prepared for some harsh truths.

I think the media may have portrayed blonde & blue-eyed as the standard of beauty in the past, but not anymore. An example is what little kids are presented with:

I was a child in the 70s, and all the Disney movies I grew up with had blond heroines: Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty. Snow White was the exception, but no one really paid attention to her anyway; we just watched the dwarves. The Brady girls were all blond. The prettiest models in our moms' magazines like Cheryl Tiegs, were all blondes. The best Charlie's Angels were the blondes. Little girls with brown hair would sometimes tease me, saying they hated blond hair. I would cry my eyes out, but inside, I knew better.

All my Barbies were blond, and all my baby dolls and little-girl dolls were blond. Toy store shelves had mostly blond/ blue eyed dolls. I am blond and green-eyed, so as a little girl, I think I got the message that what I had was what was the standard, and I sure was glad. I guess I was fortunate in that all the movies and toys targeted at little girls, had girls that looked like me. When I was little, I never thought about what it must have been like for brunettess, redheads, or darker-skinned girls. Though I do remember a few baby dolls in the 70s coming in the white skin-with-blond hair variety and the brown skin-black hair variety. But that was it. Nothing in between.

But ever since The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Pocahontas, Jasmine, Belle, Tiana, etc, kids are now getting the message that beauty comes in all colors. Dolls have a variety of hair colors and skin colors. The "Disney Princesses" that every little girl adors are a nice rainbow of diversity.

The models that are favored are now the ones who have an "exotic" look, which means pretty much anything but blond-and-blue. I can hardly find anyone in beauty magazines that has my coloring (except porn stars with fake blond hair!) so I guess there has been a total 180. Even in movies--I think we mentioned this in a thread in the movies forum, the bad female character is now usually blond, and the good one is now brunette.

I kind of see it as the necessary swing of the pendulum, and don't get bothered by the current lack of popularlity of blondes.

She's "just there." A too-round face, a high forehead, and features that foretell she will be chunky. Most people wouldn't even look at her twice on a subway train.

Samantha Bricks is a perfect example, and I actually believe every word she says--except for the part about women being so jealous of her beauty. I bet she has tons of male admirers because of the whole blonde hair/blue eyed thing she has going on

Eh, believe it with a grain of salt. I don't think she's making these incidents up, but I think she exaggerating them, misrepresenting the truth, and skewing the context to fit her view. It's like thinking that because people hold the door for you or because the bartender gives you a free drink that you must have wooed them with you good looks. Plus, creepy men will do a lot of a vagina, as long as it's not attached to a complete troll.

I actually think so too.

I am going to over share here.

In college, my dorm had a charity fund raiser auction thing. People could offer up their services, people would bid, and the money went to some cause.

Most people did logical stuff like "ironing services," copy editing, a free ride to Target, dance lessons. Or something related to one of their talents.

There was this group of european blond girls. I think 5 of them. 4 of them were completely stuck up i.e. they didn't say hi in the halls. Or even talk to people who weren't blond. Seriously. I got dirty looks from the ring leader daily. The ring leader was also a little trashy. She would change with her windows open facing the courtyard. Courtyard facing rooms were very popular for this reason.

Personally, I thought 2 of the girls were really hot, and the other ones were mediocre. But plenty of people thought they were hot. I was confused. They had horrible attitudes.

But to be completely honest, these girls were no fun at all. They only talked to other blond people. They refused to socialize with people that weren't white. And had crappy attitudes. (The one nice girl, and the prettiest one in my opinion, was later kicked out of the group. Probably because she started making friends with non blond people)

I don't remember how much money the fundraiser made. But I do remember those girls offered up an evening hanging out with them (and you could take pictures of you with 5 "hot" blind girls!). My friends and I were thinking, who on earth would pay to hang out with them?

Anyway, it turned out to be the most popular thing of the entire night. The price kept going up and up. Some of their white guy frends were bidding. A group of 5 south asian and arab guys (they were exchange students, one was a rich saudi guy to fit wit the stereotype) spent like $300 on this evening with the blonds. The called themselves the muslim mafia or similar (this was before 9/11 so this wasn't a big deal).

The ring leader looked so annoyed. She thought she was going to have an evening hanging out with all of the "white guys" (some brits, kiwis, and aussies that were always flirting with them). And then she got the Muslims.

We were mean, and we thought it was pretty funny the evening didn't turn out the way she wanted.

As it turns out, later in the year, we ended up hanging out with those guys, and they became some of my best college friends (still in touch with half of them now!). So one night we were checking out their photo albums, and we saw pics of that infamous evening.

So we started asking: um why did you guys waste your money on that.

They weren't really sure, it started to become a competition almost. There were pics of them drinking mocktails and the guys smoking cigars, and they fully admitted the evening with the girls were really boring and it was a waste of money.

These guys have hilarious photo albums from college. Every pic is with them, and a "harem" of different women. one of my buddies got married, and the first time I met his then-fiancee, she was like "I recognize you from the photo album!" For some reason, I seem to be in a lot of these "harem" pics.

We realized, that we should have offered up a similar evening, with the "exotic" girls. (at that time my bffs were a diverse group of us pretty much representing all the continents! It would have been pretty hilarious, we had one for ever type. )

To this day, I still don't understand this concept of "blond privilege."

I dont. But im a woman; maybe there's a difference, eh. I like all men, and blonde hair blue eyes dont do a thing for me anymore than dark hair or dark eyes. And as far as women go, I honest to God actually find the tanned dark haired foreign-ish looking women to be prettier.
