I'm starting to interview for new jobs. I think I need a better suit.
What are the best styles for someone interviewing for professional business consulting-type jobs? Male, mid-30's. Where would I buy such a suit without spending a fortune?
Most top-tier business suits made of 100% wool are gonna run you at least $500+ each. If you're a mid-career professional making 6 figures or more, it's money well spent since your colleagues & the clients you pitch to will all be similarly attired. You don't want to come off looking like a waiter, bouncer or Hertz counter guy in a polyester suit. Stop in a Brooks Brothers just to see what a high-quality suit should look & fit like. Take a look at the Fitzgerald or Regent cut. Even if they're out of your price range you get a feel for the wool & the drape of the jacket. Then head over to Nordstrom Rack. You can pick up Theory, Joseph Abboud & Robert Talbott for around $300 to $350. They're not full-canvas construction like you find at BB or Canali but it'll suffice. For around $400~500 you can pick-up the cheaper fused lines of Zegna at their outlet stores, but it's really hit or miss and you need to call before you make the trek.

Ha ha, I was I was at Nordstrom Rack when you wrote this. I ended up getting a Calvin Klein suit for $260 including free alteration. Maybe not the highest end, but my wallet likes it.
Navy blue or charcoal grey suit, white shirt, blue or grey tie. On a budget you can check out places like Men's Wearhouse or Jos A. Bank. Some of the outlet places such as Nordstrom Rack, Saks off Fifth, Brooks Brothers Outlet etc., are also good places to look. Even Macy's has some decent suits on sale.
