Just about anyone who knows a thing or two about Russia will know that Moscow and St. Petersburg are by far and away the most important Russian cities.

My question is, which Russian city can legitimately be considered the "third city" - in terms of importance to the country as a whole? Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

In third place after two major metropolitan areas is Tyumen. Tyumen oil and gas are called unofficial capital of Russia. But the beauty and importance of architectural monuments is the third city of Kazan (photo is on my album)
Officially, the list includes -
1 V.Novgorod-September 18, 2009 at a meeting of the State Council in Veliky Novgorod proposal to assign the status of the third capital city put forward Nikita Mikhalkov, which was appreciative response at the time president and now prime minister Dmitry Medvedev, who called the city of the ancient capital of the Russian state.
2 Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, the immediate object of the Battle of Stalingrad. Some politicians expressed their opinion about the city as the capital of the third, due to its special geopolitical location of the country, citing the example of the Nazis developed a plan "Barbarossa", according to which the Germans to attack the Soviet Union saw its three key points: Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad.

3 Yekaterinburg, the "capital of the Urals" - "reference edge power", leader of the ranking of promising Russian cities , one of the best cities to do business , is ranked third in the country for most of the economic and political indicators , was often called local authorities, "the third capital of Russia" until 2009, three times was considered as a potential temporary seat of government: the first Soviet - in the event of the failure of the conclusion of the Brest-Litovsk Treaty and the defeat of Germany and the Western Allies on the battlefields of the First world War, the Soviet in the decades of the Cold war - as reserve clause governing the country in crisis, the Russian - in the event of the failure of attempts to reflect the coup d'etat in 1991, is the administrative center of the Sverdlovsk region and the Urals Federal District, as the city hosted the headquarters of the Joint strategic Command, "the Centre".

4 Kazan is one of the cities of Russia, which has the official status of the capital city (Republic of Tatarstan), and the city has great cultural and historical potential, has the second highest number of second and third parameters In the country, second only to Ekaterinburg. Recently there has been a marked increase in the development of the city, Kazan - the capital of the Summer Universiade in 2013.

5 Novgorod-covert "capital of the Volga Region", in the late XX century, received the title of Russia's "capital of reforms", early assumed to be the capital of the state of the Decembrists, in the XIV century was the capital of the principality of Nizhny Novgorod, the last city in the historical fact Rospatent defended its priority over Kazan to the right of the brand "third capital of Russia"

6 Novosibirsk unspoken "capital of Siberia", the third city in Russia in terms of population, was offered the role of the capital of a large part of the functionaries of the ruling party United Russia) was considered as a potential temporary seat of the Russian government in the event of a decision on the further against unconstitutional dissolution of the Supreme Council 1993 The closest major city to the geographical center of Russia.

7 Omsk of the Civil War was the capital of a unified nationwide anti-Bolshevik government (Omsk directory, then the Supreme White) AV Kolchak.

8 Samara city, actually twice acted as a temporary capital: at the beginning of the Civil War in Russia - the first seat of the all-Russian anti-Bolshevik government (Committee members of the Constituent Assembly (Komuch)), in the years of the Great Patriotic War - the seat of the government of the USSR and the diplomatic missions of foreign states, the center the third largest metropolitan area Samara-Togliatti.

Novosibirsk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Probably Novosibirsk ( at least used to be, because of the importance of the academgorodok)

Akademgorodok - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

- don't know exactly how important it is now.
