I say Novogorod. Be sure to check out the Saint Sophia Chatedral.

The historical Novgorod? Nah, it's a village these days. Size of Vantaa.

"From 1550 to 1700, Russia grew 35,000 km2 (about the size of the Netherlands) a year."

Novosibirsk. Though those photos of Yekaterinburg are pretty convincing.

( Another thing - I think Russians ( real Russians, not mutts like me ) actually like winters; I've noticed the difference even in my own family))))
I love winters in Russia! I'd never experienced a real winter, having lived only on the West Coast, USA. One of the fun things about winter in Russia is wearing fur. Also, depending on the part of the country, winters can be gloriously sunny! Cold, but bright and sunny. The difficult part is if you're in an area that gets below -25 or -30 Celcius. It's hard to force yourself to go outside, and it's hard to breathe. I don't know how people manage to go to work every day in those conditions, in the far north.

I'd say Kazan (Tatarstan's capital)
