Carlin was a master of observation and people could relate to his observations.
"Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"
Masterful.
Jay Leno is another with a gift for observation.
“How come you never see a headline like, ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’?”
Leno was a great stand-up comedian. He kind of fell of after the Tonight Show (some would say "sold out" but for the money he made, who wouldn't?), but those old videos of him from the 70s and early 80s on Youtube are gold.
George Carlin
Sam Kinison
Richard Pryor
Chris Rock
Dave Chappelle
Robin Williams
Eugene Levy and John Candy as the Schmenge Brothers
Bill Burr
Steve Harvey (long before the game show gig)
Honorable Mention: TV hosts (Letterman, Conan, Carson, etc)
Don't think Bill Connelly has been mentioned yet. Not sure how much I knew of him before coming to the UK, but he's easily one of the all-time greats, IMHO.
Even though I didn't put him on my list, after thinking about it, Lenny Bruce deserves a spot on my list.
Not because I personally think he was all that funny, he died 5 years before I was born, but because every comedian on my list would place him as number 1 on their list. That has to count for something.
