Not sure what the debate is between you and other poster but the entire tax increase is supposed to go to SCHIP.
The debate is this. The tax increase will result in one of two things
1) People will continue to smoke, pay more taxes, meaning the pledge was a lie
2) People stop smoking, less money goes to SCHIP, and this means that other taxes need to be raised to fund this and other programs, meaning again, it was a lie.. Either way.. taxes have gone up..

Sounds right to me. It is one or the other of those.
So is investing, going to work, working hard, becoming rich.. Thats also a CHOICE.. whats your point? That those who do this shouldnt be taxed either?
A true socialist point of view.
My parents raised me where going to work and working hard was something you did for survival. Not a choice, but I guess in Obamas world if you don't want to work that's OK.

I smoke, so I'm not celebrating the idea of paying more.
1) I disagree with your assumption of malice and consequent victory celebration "he's a liar! This proves it!". The link to politifact presents a couple of perspectives. And you call it a pledge? cute. I guess campaign promise didn't sound dramatic enough?
2) How much money would we save if fewer people smoked (healthcare costs)? I don't have an answer, but I bet it would not be insignificant.

How much money would be saved if we put $5 tax on Big Macs to lower heart attacks? That also would save lives... How many lives would be saved if we ban driving vehicles and thereby no more car accidents? Why how much money would be saved if we banned liberals from reproducing? At least welfare costs would go down...

Sigh.
1. You presented a negative - no further funding when people stop smoking.
2. I wonder in response, how much that would be cancelled out by reduction in healthcare costs.
3. You wander off into never-never land.
A pleasure as always.
