It would have been FAR more politically better for Obama to say to the Republicans "you made this mess, you lie in it" and just refused to do anything. That is what I would have done. Let the house of cards fall and make the GOP pay for it on Election day.
I guess Obama cares more about the country than many people have given him credit for.
