Hi,
I am planning to move to Las Cruces from the Sacramento area. I am anxious to get away from all the congestion, but wonder how much I'll miss all the outdoor opportunities here. I also hope to get horses soon... Can any one tell me what the area has to offer for trail riding? I am a big runner and it seems that there are a few running groups - what about running trails as well? What is Elephant Butte like? I know that it's a pretty large lake for much of the year. Any info for the outdoor enthusiast would be great.

Las Cruces is in New Mexico, you may want to ask about all this there?

I am not as familiar with Las Cruces as I used to be. El Paso Community college has a nice running track around it, and I am sure New Mexico State will too. Las Cruces is a College town, laid back with some nice parks. Elephant butte I have not been too in years, but with the recent drought I have heard it has been rather low.. with all the snow and rain lately it maybe better now. But the lake is a good drive in state to get too, so is Cloud Croft if you want to see any forest areas. Good luck on your move.. I hope some one here is more help than I.

I think Malamute has mentioned a lot of horse riding taking place in the northern areas of El Paso.

There is a Great Horse riding place ( what valley is off Mesa near Santa Teresa again? ) I took lessons there a long time ago when I was in Jr. High.

I think Underwood is still out here in the North East.. I'll find out for you.

Dazey.....Elephant Butte is the largest body of water in New Mexico about an hour north of Las Cruces. There's water sking and Jetsking galore. Just make sure and bring some kind of cover as there are no trees and it gets in the mid to high 90's there. I believe also all long the Rio Grande going up to Tor C there are trails all along it like Leesburg Dam Rec Area and you can explore old fort Ft.Seldon etc...

I'll let those from Las Cruces who post on here from time to time speak about Cruces as they'd know more than me but the Organ Mountains there have trails especially on the back side or eastern slopes (aguirre springs). About 2 hours to the Northwest is the Mogollon mountains that have 100's of miles of Pine tree topped mountains with camping and fishing etc...or 1 1/2 hours to the East is the Sacramento Mountains with the same as the Mogollon's.

Thanx so much for all your input and info... I was spoiled growing up and had trails galore right in my back yard (but it was in MN - and I don't do well with the winters there)... I am a very active person - I love horseback riding, running, swimming, water-skiing, hiking. I just hope that I won't need to travel an hour or more to visit my adventure lands.

In the upper valley there are still ranches and farming although they're quickly getting bought out by developers. On the NM side of the upper valley it's still not too uncommon to see some riders along the old highways, canal levies, or along the rio grande.

Here's some sites of Elephant Butte and Caballo Reservoirs about an hour north of Las Cruces.

That is a beautiful lake. I would take two awnings with me though. Looks like great fishing there.
