If you wanted kids to be technology ready wouldn't you use a regular laptop that has a diversity of programs instead of an Ipad that only has Apple applications?
Very true. Apple applications are all style and no substance.
Actually the iPad is more useful than you would think for business-type of application. Many fortune 500 companies are now giving executives iPads instead of laptops.

I can see that. But heaven forbid the kid is interesting in engineering or something technical. The iPad would be a hindrance

Man are you wrong. The iPad has a variety of really great educational apps. This is especially true for special needs children like my grandson. He uses the iPad with Proloquo2go to communicate and it has taught him a lot of verbal communication. While it may not be as helpful as a laptop in school situations, Apple has developed many great apps.
I've heard that it's great for special needs children to teach them to communicate with the outside world. Technology, if used correctly, is a powerful tool.
That is definitely true...we have to assume this school knows what kind of classes (and what resources for those classes) their students will have.
