He had gone a few houses over, went into someone's back yard through a gap in the fence and got himself stuck in a pest trap! Apparently someone was having trouble with varmints and was trying to capture them humanely with catfood in the pest trap. I learned this from animal control when I picked him up this afternoon.
Thank goodness for those people and their pest trap or I might have never seen my little boy again!
And than YOU ALL for your wonderful, caring, and helpful advice. I'm so happy now that my little boy is home again!
Willie ran through a fence on our Thanksgiving road trip, and was "lost" for about ten minutes in my SO's grandfather's neighborhood in a strange city in a strange state late at night. My heart stopped, I just knew we weren't gonna see him again.
I crouched near the gap he ran through with a handful of treats, and just kept my voice going, saying his name, in case he was scared and could hear me and find his way back. Soon enough, I heard the jingle jangle of his tags and he came running back. He was pretty scared. My SO was out in the yard with him, but took a phone call and got distracted, and Willie squeezed through a gap. Had I been there, he'd have been on a tether, since I wasn't familiar with how well the yard was fenced, but I wasn't out there with them at the time. He is microchipped and has ID tags, but I was more afraid of him running out into the road in an unfamiliar area.
He has run out the front door at our house, before, if somebody's not being super vigilant when they answer the door, but he doesn't go far. All we have to do is go to the car and open the door and he runs back and hops in because he thinks it is time for a car ride. This trick didn't work on our road trip, probably because we were in a rental car and in a new location that he was unfamiliar with.
I am soooooo glad your little dog is home safe and sound. They can be sneaky little buggers so you do have to watch them closely. Even in the yard we take ours out on a leash.
