I use organic smooth when I use it at all. However, peanut butter is high in calories and fat, so if you use it be sure to adjust the rest of your dog's food intake to account for the amount of peanut butter you use.
Since we just use a teaspoon or two we really don't worry about the salt or anything but I suppose if your dog is on a low salt diet that would be an issue. Our dog does love it in his kong though it is sooo funny to watch him licking and licking
if your dog is on a low salt diet that would be an issue.
I'd have to disagree with the notion that a "low/no salt diet" is some sort of special diet for dogs. Sodium is not a mineral they need and would only be present in low/naturally occurring levels in what they would eat naturally. I feel that added salt is just a totally unnecessary - and largely avoidable - substance.
Ref the OP's dog: she's a very young pup of tiny size. Salt is just going to make her very young kidneys have to work overtime - unnecessarily in my view.
We use ground peanuts, not store bought jarred pb. The only ingredient is peanuts, no salt or sugar added. We grind them ourselves, so we know what he's really getting. We rarely fill his kong though, since he prefers to play with it and not eat out of it.
I wouldn't use Peanut Butter at all in a Kong toy. Dogs seem to freak out when the peanut butter gets stuck to the roof of their mouth and my concern is that they can choke on it. I hate seeing my little dog trying to get it off the roof of her mouth...had only one episode with her and peanut butter was enough for me.
My big dogs, 65-98 lbs, loooove peanut butter in their Kongs! I use about a teaspoon and they spend a long time getting it out. Since I eat creamy Jif, that is what they get but I don't give it to them more than once/week. That way it's a Very special treat.
Thanks for all the feedback. I am not sure if she will like peanut butter since we have not tried it before, but I thought I would give it a shot sometime. If she liked it...it could be a special treat.
IF my dog liked peanut butter (which he absolutely HATES), I'd use the kind with NO added salt or sugar.
However he DOES love non-fat, plain (no sugar) yogurt frozen in his Kong. I put some in a sieve set over a bowl overnight to thicken up an it doesn't run out the hole in the end that way.
