And another vote for anal glands! (yuck)

Have the vet do it. Apparently there are two ways to express them - external and internal - and a lot of times groomers only do the external so they may not get expressed.

It REALLY smells.

This really isn't hard to do yourself. Some gloves, KY jelly and a tissue to hold over it and you'll be fine. If you picture the anus as a clock as you look at it from behind the glands are at about 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock. You can feel them. With your thumb on the outside and your finger on the inside you can grasp and gently squeeze, making sure you have the tissue! Then switch hands to do the other gland (unless you're ambidextrous).

Anal glands....Yorkies tend to have an anal gland problem. My girlfriend had two female Yorkies and she had to empty their anal glands every so often.

Anal Glands! Yes, a Vet visit is a must. Groomers just squeeze on the outside. (I'm a groomer) It is Not good for them because not only does it Not get all of the liquid out, it also is a High risk of impaction. Especially if the groomer does Not know exactly what they are doing. Also they would Have to go and get them "cleaned out" more often too.
So, the Vet goes internally.

Quality food equals healthy bowels and bowel movements and this may reduce this problem as well.

Thanks for all of your responses. I'll have the vet look at her glands.

If you have the slightest interest in doing it yourself, let the vet show you how to do it.

Definitely let the vet show you first before you try to do it yourself. If you don't know what your doing, you can actually do more harm then good, including causing an abcessed gland, which is by far worse then having full glands.

Yes. A friend of mine decided to perform this procedure on her dog and she said she almost got sick from the odor.

I must have tried this 50 times....with no results. I even did an internet search with pics demonstrating it! DUH! is me!

Whoa...poor "object of your affections"!!! Wellll...I'd say let the vet try, but no more of that for you, my dear! On the other hand, all is clear, I'd bet...
