do you ask for the blood work? I did, one vet just did it, one said it is optional? the dog is healthy and just turned 7. Also what would be an average cost. I think my quote is 50 blood 65 teeth, maybe 175-200 in total? oh then the medicine to put her to sleep 65.
My little daschund has terrible oral health. He always has to be put under, and always losses teeth (no more! he now only has 4). We do it about every 2 years, I don't want to put him under more than that. Usually I do not have blood work done, and it's about $150. My big dog was maybe $100?, he's only done it once.
For a healthy 7 year old dog, personally I wouldn't get blood work.
At age seven, your dog is considered a senior and we highly recommend yearly bloodwork as well as pre-anesthetic just to make sure that everything is working properly and there are no surprises once the dog is under anesthesia. If the dog has had yearly bloodwork within a couple of months before, then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Under age 7, we highly recommend the bloodwork before surgery, and I think we may actually require it for senior pets (though I am not positive about that) regardless, it's always a good idea.
The cost of your dental is super cheap!!! I suggest that you just ask them for an estimate of what the bloodwork will cost and go from there, that shouldn't be a problem.
Either way you go, good job for taking care of your pooches teeth, so many people totally neglect that and it can cause a whole host of health problems if they develop dental disease.
For $50 the blood work is cheap - I would get it. I just paid $75 fro bloodwrk for our doggie last april. Also, age 7 is not really very senior for a dachshund.
I had my doggies cleaned twice as well, and she got a rootcanal... didn't know they did those on doggies did you?
Next dog, is going to learn to get their teeth brushed. Ours would never sit still for it.
That's a deal for teeth cleaning. I can't remember how much I paid for my 8 pound, 7 year old's blood work. But hers was done one month before the teeth cleaning.
Wow, my vet runs a special once a year where the teeth-cleaning is $75, I think that includes the bloodwork (we usually have recent bloodwork already since we're in this office often enough ). His normal rate the rest of the year is $125 or something like that.
One the question of bloodwork, yes, I think you do need it done - I assumed all vets required it.
My vet quoted me a price of $200 - $250 depending on exactly what I had him do for my dog. At the time my dog got her teeth cleaned, she was having surgery to remove two teeth she had somehow broken, so the total cost was $460 which included meds and follow up care.
