fwiw .... I agree with teh poster above about finding another vet who will prescribe medication.... the poor dog is obviously horribly stressed by the noise.... why should he be subjected to that over and over and over again if there is help available??

Mom was even thinking of moving from her home of 45 years... it is no exaggeration to say the 4th of July is celebrated at least 6 weeks where she lives and the fireworks/cannon from the stadium 4 miles away can make the windows rattle...
Just not fair to all the animals...
The hot wire was not an easy decision... I just was afraid that he would get hit by a car or worse... he has a huge yard at his disposal and goes for daily long walks.
i wasn't criticzing the hot wire.... desperate times call for desperate measures....
I was trying to say that medication could very well be beneficial ..... if it calms him enough to not become so distressed, then it would be a good thing....

I might have to revisit or pick one up...
I've heard that if, for whatever reason, you want to return the Thundershirt, it's fully refundable. Definitely worth a try if it won't cost you a penny.
You mentioned in your original post that the only thing that calms the pup is if your mother holds him... but that she cannot. Is there a reason that she can't? (I'm not prying; I'm not asking for details. But if holding him does the trick, that's what I'd do. Not for 6 long weeks, though...)

I wish you and your Mom and the pup all the best.
He's about 45 pounds and mom is 78 years old and about a 100 pounds... there really is no way she can hold him like she did when he was a couple of weeks old 11 years ago... also, her skin is easily damaged and it takes almost nothing with "Onion Skin" arms to cause it to bleed... and it is nothing her dog is doing... just his pressure from his paws...

Got it. That's what I suspected.
I'm about 100 pounds, Artie is 35 pounds, but I'm only 47... and holding him is not always easy on me either. I have the scratches and bruises to show for it.
I wish that there was an easy solution. I think you should try out the Thundershirt, especially since it's refundable. And, if that doesn't work, find another vet... one who will prescribe. My gosh, you'd think a vet would want to make life easy on an 11 year-old dog and his 78 year-old person.
