My bulldog gets this every spring.....Currently she is on antibiotics, which usually work althought it takes a few weeks. This time it isn't clearing up...But she has had this happen yearly, she is almost 4. It looks awful, her skin gets almost black where the patchy starts. It really has never been diagnosed as anything more than "unknown" she has had all the skins tests the first time. I think it has to do w/ my yard....we have lots of snow, and springs are damp...I suspect some sort of fungus...

Jan, yikes! Has the vet tried anything besides the antibiotics?

DandJ, it's such a "new to me" food that I've completely forgotten the name of it. I'm at work, or I'd go check, lol! Will remember to write it down tonight and post back to you about that. I feel like an ass for not remembering off hand.. it must be Monday.

Don't feel like an ass. I barely remember my name on some mornings.

@ Paint It Pink My Dog is going thru the SAME EXACT problem... As everyone here said, ITS THE FOOD! Im switching her food Immediatly. Whats odd is I just switched her food over 2 months ago and these "dry" & bald spots started popping up. As you said, one will "go away" and another would surface. SAME EXACT PROBLEM. I know its the food. Try that first! Than Give your pup an OATMEAL bath and as the days go by, they should start going away. This is my 2nd run with this problem. Its horrible what they go thru :-( Im going to stick with ONE and The best food I can find. I have read all of the replies and everyone here has grrreat advice as well. With that, I'm SURE you will figure out and FIX the problem for you and Your Pup's sake! <3

It sounds like she might have allergies. Have you taken her to the vet? It could be food allergies in which case she needs to be on a limited diet or it could be seasonal allergies and she needs antihistamines and maybe something stronger like prednisone. You need to figure out which of these it is and the only way to do that is to take her to the vet. It could be a combination of both too. Pet store supplies won't help and prozac won't fix either of those. If you have taken her to the vet and that hasn't worked then you need to see a veterinary dermatologist.

If a veterinarian has determined it's not allergies and has determined that it's OCD or anxiety related, then you need to figure out something to help her feel more secure. Again talk to the vet and ask him to recommend a trainer or behavior specialist. More exercise might help as well as possibly getting another dog as a companion. If it's not allergies, it also could be stress related if you've had major changes in the household or in living conditions.

Assuming she is under a vet's care since she is on Prozac. Prozac, or any similar drug, will only help if the cause is behavioral. If the cause is behavioral she may need a different SSRI drug...with SSRIs several may not work but one might. For example, Prozac did nothing for one of my dog's extreme sound phobia but Zoloft worked wonders. Switching SSRIs takes time since the dog must be weaned off the current one before trying another. If the cause is allergies Prozac or any other SSRI won't help at all.

Allergies can be very difficult to resolve. Most canine allergies are caused by an allergy to pollen/plant and some are caused by food.

1) Switch her to a raw diet...that will likely improve her immune system which may resolve the inappropriate allergic immune response. There is a huge amount of anecdotal evidence in favor of the raw diet as a resolution for allergies.

2) Get a kiddie wading pool and teach her to step into it after every single excursion outdoors and just before she re-enters the house to rinse off the allergens. She's a Lab. She will prolly adore you for it. Change the water in the pool often.

3) Take her to a good holistic vet. They have much better success rates with canine allergies. They will advise a raw diet so if you can make that switch you'll be one step ahead.

Here is a good guide for switching from kibble to raw: http://www.bravorawdiet.com/pdf/BravoBeginnings.pdf
