BREMERTON, Wash. -- Bremerton police say a pit bull reported as a menacing dog was just protecting its owner, who had suffered a heart attack and died on a sidewalk while the two were out walking.

Detective Jason Vertefeuille says the 51-year-old Bremerton woman collapsed late Tuesday.

I'm sorry for the poor woman and hope that her pet didn't hinder a chance a survival.
But it does show the power of love and protection. He knew his owner was down and was protecting her in the only way he knew how.
Hopefully the room-mate will keep him as he seems to be such a loyal pet.

This is why I love dogs. The dog did it's job. The police also did their jobs but I'm glad they didn't kill the dog or hurt it in a cruel way. It's good that they let the dog go back home instead of putting it in a dirty cage with a bunch of other dogs. That would be like punishment for doing something good. Think if the dog would have been a mentally disabled loved one of the woman. Putting that person in a jail cell until someone claimed him/her would be awful.

I was wondering the same thing. The first minute after collapsing is crucial and clearly no one was able to help her because the dog was in the way. So sad, I wonder if she would have made it had CPR been administered immediately.
