My wife is trying to lose about 20 pds. or so but is having a tough time. She has been eating right and exercising almost every day.
She walks on treadmill about 2 miles in 30 min. and also uses some weights. She will lose 2-3 pds a week, then gain some back. A few years ago she did lose all she wanted then gained it back, doing the same thing. I tell her she needs to do some strenuous exercise that really makes her sweat, but she says no she doesnt. What is wrong?

Well, it appears that it works until she does *something different* and puts it back on.
My guess is that she watches what she eats and then goes "off the wagon" for a week.
Sounds like her exercise is low impact....hard to say though.
I have found that through they years I have lost and gained lost and gained. When I was younger I was able to do that. Now that I'm getting older and the pounds are harder to get off, I have come to a realization that what I have to do is make changes to my life and keep with it. So I no longer say that I am dieting, what I now say "I have adopted a new healthy way of eating." I have got to do this for the rest of my life. Now and again I will let myself have pizza and a few beers, but I know that I can't do this all of the time ... now it's a treat to go out and order pizza and a pitcher of beer with a few friends.
If you wife is doing the same routine day in and day out then her body will become used to it and if the articles that I have been reading are true then you have to switch up your routine, 1 day do cardio and the next day do strenght training.
I have been losing 1-2 pounds per week after the first 10 pounds came off, and I think that losing it slowley is the right way (for me), because I have done diets (Scarsdale Medical Diet) that I lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks and I have to say that it did not stay off. Now I am not following any particular diet, I just found the foods (lots of veggies mainly raw) that I like and a plan that I can follow for the rest of my life.
I think that everyone really has to work it out for themselves and come to the realization that there is no "quick fix", and what works for one person won't necessarily work for another.

Brilliant post.
If you aren't making lifestyle changes, nothing is permanent. Also, once it's a lifestyle change it is no longer a diet etc.....it's just the way you live...you don't even have to think about it much.

Have the both of you considered a thorough check-up (physical exam)?
this will reveal if there's any metabolic or hormonal disorders that may
cause this fluctuation in weight, I suggest doing this first, then you will
know what you're have to work with along with some possible support from that physician as to the best weight loss plan for your wife.
just my thoughts
Thanks;
I hope all will go well with you both
Whats wrong is she is just overeating for her activity level again and again.
She should try to pick the middle of her light weight and her heavy weight and try to maintain that.
If she is not 20 pounds overweight and is fighting vanity lbs she needs to stop or her body fat is going to be high. Especially with that workout and not really be strict with the diet. If you barely workout you have to tweak your diet.
I don't know what she is doing to lose dietary wise. But if you go up in calories/carbs you have to wean up in small increments or one will tend to gain back weight more easily. Especially if you have a naturally slower metabolism.
google: spark diet
Its free and they have recipes, workouts etc. Caloriecount.com is good too.
When I lost weight biking 5030 miles, I would do a 36 to 56 miles workout where I'd drop 1 to 2 lbs the next day. Then after normal eating that day about 1 lb comes back on as a setback. So you lose some from workouts but the body fights changes in body fats and wants to put some back on but it doesn't get 100% so you lose some weight. - Just my experience from lots of workouts.
Well you can tell her about simple exercises. There are many free programs available worldwide; I have also found one of the video programs of Michael. This program looks some better perhaps this can be helpful to you.
