I tried to word it in a way that made it seem progressive, lol. But to the point, these homes were built in like 1920-ish and so of course people didn't prioritize health and standards of living when building or living in heavily industrialized areas.

By the time cars got really popular and then the post-war boom came along, people didn't want to live down the street from where they worked. I guess I off-worded it the first time around.

There seems to be some positives to this, in my eyes...

The city needs to shrink in size anyway
The people that are moving out could move into another decent neighbourhood in the city limits that is fighting to improve itself, and the numbers increasing could be a really big help in making those communities smaller

Lets face facts, large companies do bad things, it would not be beyond them to have made this area dangerous to live in, health wise. it's better to be safe, and create a buffer zone.

I know this is an emotive subject though, and can't imagine what these residents are thinking right now

That neighborhood has always tripped me out, in a good way. It's mostly white and Mexican and once was heavily Italian still some old timers left. I wonder what will become of the famous Giovanni's Ristorante, which has great Italian food and Gonella's Foods which has one of the best italain subs in all metro Detroit? If you've never been to either, do yourself a favor an go before it's too late. I can't say I wouldn't take the money and run if I lived there, it's pretty much the most polluted place I've ever spent time in. The pollution is actually visible some days, so I don't know what's right or what is wrong all I know it's an interesting place.

Marathon Oil does not have the power of eminent domain so that's why they are offering high prices. Still, they are wiping out a neighborhood. No question about that. The backwards thinkers in Detroit also want to destroy other parts of the City. This whole quest for a second, expensive bridge to Canada will wipe out an area next to Fort Wayne--an area which definitely should be protected. These politicians keep spewing lies so often that many wind up believing them. There is no way that a second bridge will not require hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure costs to connect to the new bridge. But, I digress...
