The storied and abandoned Brewster-Douglass public housing complex that once offered housing to low-income Detroiters, including the families of Motown legends Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson, is now a towering symbol of the city's residential decline.
The four 14-story high-rise apartments -- decaying, windowless and tagged with graffiti -- greet drivers along I-75 across from Ford Field.

This is one place that I abosultely agree with tearing something down. those buildings were an eyesore 30 years ago. It makes me sad to realize people have to live like that.

From the article,

"We will create affordable housing and commercial development in its place."

The same thing is happening with the former Jeffries East projects in Midtown. I guess the low income people will shop at the Whole Foods Market.

I liked Angelo (Baldy) Hill's comment the best - "Looks like a war came through here."

Brush Park is a mess. And it's not one of those neighborhoods that people can just ignore either. Unfortunately, it's smack dead in between downtown and midtown, meaning that it is probably seen alot more commonly to visitors then most neighborhoods in the city. And the visitors aren't just going to ignore the fact that there is an area like that just blocks from downtown and midtown. And what's even worse is that is a story they might go back home telling people when they ask "how was Detroit?". When someone who doesn't know Detroit well visits WSU, I already know to get prepared to explain Brush Park. Can't wait till that is revitalized. WSU might actually get more students interested in living in dorms when it's done.

Not sure if housing would be the best option there. Bordered on 2 (of 4) sides by expressway, it has got to be noisy and getting to the other side of the expressways would be a hassle. Maybe more reasonable for commercial development or a hockey stadium (freeway access).
