Hey Denver locals,
I am considering a new job in Denver. The salary is ~80K but I have been searching and found the Denver area seems expensive. Is this enough for me to support my three children? It's been pretty easy to identify housing, but what about all the other costs like super markets, heating bills, and clothing? My weekly grocery bill now is usually around $100 and power and gas add up to around $200 per month in summer and $350 in winter (Georgia).

Sorry to be so direct and personal, but these are the hidden costs that are really hard to gauge from a distance. I am excited about the opportunity, but want to protect against sticker shock once I am there.

TIA

There seem to be lots of questions about utilities lately. It looks like my last bill was ~$125 for a 2000 sq ft house. It will be higher in winter with the heating. It's been so long since I've bought groceries anywhere else, I don't know if they're higher or lower here. $100/wk for a family of five seems low to me. Of course, if you eat out a lot, you have to factor that in, too. I think clothing is roughly the same as everywhere else.

Thanks Katiana for your response. My children are young - and we are very frugal. We may eat out once every two weeks or so just to change things up a bit.

You're welcome. Well, yeah, young children make a difference. I think you could do it on $80K.

On a related note, what would be a reasonable salary for a young, single male like myself who is planning on moving to Denver? I am thinking of a single-bedroom and single-bathroom apartment or condo in a reasonably safe neighborhood in Denver (preferably downtown near a mass transit stop), and cooking my own meals for the most part. Would $50k or $60k be enough for me to live on comfortably, or would I need to find a job that pays more so as to cover all the necessary expenses (utilities, water, etc.)?

Absolutely. If you don't have any debt and aren't a big spender you could be quite comfortable on that salary as a single. You'd probably be looking to live in Capitol Hill if you want to live near downtown for cheap.

Default Moving to Denver

I am considering moving to Denver this summer. I have a job that pays 40K. Can you afford to live comfortably?

Only if you have no debt and roommates. What do you consider comfortably?
