Okay -

Never, at least not sense I had a decent salary, has a company asked us to provide a deposit. I mean we are talking about a 760+ credit score here. . .

They said "not good enough". . .and now we have to rundown a credit reference (sheesh). Seems like a total scam too me. . .a way for them to earn interest on 300 bucks. . .

Default I understand why you are pissed off

1. Ask them which scoring service they are using.
2. Ask them if the address is a factor.

I moved from out of state to downtown Denver--they said I'd have to put down a deposit unless I allowed them to check my credit, which I did, and I was fine. I'm surprised with a high credit score that you'd have problems - I've never had to put down a deposit, even when I was a student with not very much credit history.

I had my 'old' Utility send (fax actually) a letter to my new Utility basely saying I pay my bill on time via Auto Payment system.

They (the new utility) then waved the deposit.

Thanks, OP. Your post appeared at the perfect time! I called Xcel today to have my new account set up. (I'm moving to Denver in a month from another state.) The gal on the phone told me that she has to charge me a deposit (not as high as the OP, but a deposit nonetheless). Being that I was tuned into this request due to the conversation on this thread, I asked if I could have my current electric company vouch for my payment history, and she agreed.

Not sure if it depends on who answers your call and his/her whims. I'm moving to a neighborhood that's not the least bit sketchy and I have great credit (never, ever bounced a check (during checkwriting days) nor have I ever been late with any of my bills).

So when would you get that deposit back? It seems that most places in the Denver area use them, so even if you move, you still have an account with them...

I have to call and set up my utilities with them in a couple of weeks. I guess I should plan on paying a deposit.

I had to do this too. It's a joke. But what can you do? It's one of the areas of the private sector that really isn't private. They have a monopoly for a variety of reasons. Anyway, you don't want to hear my politics.

But it's disgusting and you're not alone in your anger here.
