Utilities have a harder time turning you 'off' . There are rules about when they can and can't do it. All along you are using power, they they might not get paid for. Hence the deposit.

Most Utilities Credit the deposit to your account as a payment after x (normally 1 year) of service if you pay your bill on time.

So, I just called to set up my utilities with xcel and they did a credit check to see if I could waive the deposit- I was approved to set up everything without the deposit. I checked my credit pretty recently and it was in the 750 range.

I called today to get a monthly average on a home we are looking at purchasing and asked about the deposit. The deposit quote was 375 for the address I gave them but they mentioned the credit report or prior utility faxed letter which i will be doing.

yeah, my credit report was over 750 last time I checked. . .doesn't make a lot of sense. The worst thing is that they (the call team) have no ability to understand the "no".

Personally, its crap. I never missed any payment for any company. . .so whatever filter they have is just to earn money for the company, not adjust for risk.

I moved to CO last month, and had the same experience. My first Xcel bill was $286 in deposits and $29 in actual billing. I called Xcel, and I must say that their customer service reps are some lazy folks. You have to push them to do ANYTHING, but they told me that their 3rd party billing provider wasn't able to run a credit check because I signed up online and that they would hold my deposit until I cancelled my account. My response was HELL NO and they ran my credit check over the phone, and reduced my bill to just the charges. Mission accomplished.

yeah, we had to contact Connecticut Light and power, and they have provided a document . . .saying we are kosher.

Still if I can qualify for a 325k house in this market, but not their program, i'm not believing their system is for insurance. . .
