I have only seen a few fly in Dallas but many of them flying in Houston - perhaps it is the petroleum fumes?

I have lived in both cities and here is the real deal that no one else will tell you, if you are person type #1 you need Austin (and will hate Dallas) if #2 then you should be in Dallas.

#1. Liberal, likes to be around government, higher education, art, music, cultural, hates Wal-Mart and evil big companies, environmentalist, believes everyone is equal.

#2. Conservative, like to be around big corporate headquarters, sports teams, shopping malls, airports, big houses. Realizes not everyone is equal and people who work harder will make more.

People who are #1 usually refer to Dallas with words like "wasteland", "backwards" etc.

Do you live in either city now? I think this was true in 1979 but is less true in 2009. As it has grown and created its own brand of Central Texas sprawl, the Austin metro area has shed some of its hippie sensibility while Dallas (especially the city but increasingly the county) has become more cosmopolitan, urban, and, yes, liberal, if party-line voting is any indication. If the OP lives in Oak Lawn, Oak Cliff, East Dallas, or Lakewood, for example, and assuming the OP self-identifies as liberal, he/she could be happy. If they identify as conservative, they might prefer other parts of North Dallas, Tarrant or Collin County. In any event, the Dallas metro is big and varied enough that it really shouldn't be pigeonholed anymore.

Seems like it is all very black and white to you. I think you forgot personality #3: People who are comfortable labeling others based on the city in which they live.

I fully agree. sometimes you have to paint in broad strokes to get a point across in an abbreviated setting such as this forum. He can't possibly write a short novel about the subtle nuances and neighborhood peculiarities between each metro area. What he said is basically true and applies to about 80% of each metro area. Dallas, Harris, Bexar, and Travis counties all went blue. The suburban counties? not so much - and the metroplex is 70% suburbs. Austin metro is contained within about 3, maybe 4 counties. DFW is contained within at least a dozen. The outlying counties in N. Texas are as red as Santa's suit. The counties around Austin are pretty much redneck but only went GOP by slim margins. The only clearly conservative county was Burnet. Every county around Dallas was hardcore conservative like Burnet county. That speaks volumes.

LOL I think you have the two cities confused.

Austin is a wasteland with absolutely no art, no culture, and is filled a ton of self absorbed sports and corporate addicts. Does Long Horns ring a bell ?? Hello.

Many people in all areas of Dallas are socially liberal. It isn't just about politics which varies too.
