But I think Addison is a nice place to be for young single people.
I'm an old (27!) married lady with a kid, so I'm not really part of that scene, but if I were, I don't think I'd feel like I was "missing out" on anything by living in Addison instead of downtown or uptown. It's a very easy drive to those places on the weekends- easier than your daily commute would probrably be.
ITA. I live just south of Addison proper and I like the area. It's great for singles and young people who haven't started families yet.

I lived in Addison and would have condemned it as a glorified corporate park except that I loved my complex- Addison Circle. It was designed with New Urbanism in mind meaning that there are parks, walkable areas and street level stores and restaurants. There are pools with all the requisite patrons (hubba, hubba), adequate parking and a transit hub allthough as a Dallasonian you will never use that unless your car explodes.

Addison carries a lot of cache as its a wet area surrounded by dry ones (never could figure those out, but whatever...). Loads of places to eat and drink and as many were "walkable", this drunk could imbibe without incurring the wrath of the local constabulatory.

I agree that Lower Greenville or Lakewood would have more personality, but if you want an easy commute, check out Addison Circle (Post Properties).

Photog, a real question here is... do you prefer a suburban lifestyle or an urban lifestyle? I believe if you're making a choice between suburban and urban then you know the difference. You aren't going to find downtown/uptown kind of people in Addison or the down/up town kind of living. Addison is a suburb, designed and suited to those who do not prefer an urban lifestyle.

Your call.

As far as 'an apartment that is not part of a complex', that might be kind of hard to understand. However, there are three streets near Highland Park (in OakLawn) that have duplexes and multi (4 or 8) plexes. They are Herschel, Prescott and Hawthorne. Also, on Cole and McKinney, near Knox St. are several small type apartment buildings but I suspect fairly costly and hard to find a vacancy. However, you'll have to drive the streets to get telephone numbers to inquire about availability/price, etc.
