Middle school parents in Tennessee are up in arms upon learning that their children were being forced to recite and write the Islamic Shahada conversion creed: “Allah is the only god and Muhammad is his prophet,” as part of an alleged ‘world history’ project.
Breitbart In the Maury County School District, students were assigned a Five Pillars of Islam project that included the translation of the pillar of “Shahada” as being, “There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is his prophet.”
"This is a seventh grade state standard, and will be on the TCAP,” Ellis said. “I didn’t have a problem with the history of Islam being taught, but to go so far as to make my child write the Shahada, is unacceptable.”
Porterfield said she has no objections to her daughter learning details of the Islamic religion, but she objects to the fact that the history unit didn’t devote similar time to Christianity or Judaism.
What’s next? Writing Heil Hitler while studying German history? So what’s happening in Tennessee of all places? Detroit may be but Tennessee? BTW, the history of Islam that they are teaching has nothing to do with what really happened.
Any actual news stories to support this? Or simply opinion pieces/letter to the editor and youtube videos?
You seem to really enjoy inflammatory headlines and post titles - even if there are "truthiness" issues....
This is the second time around for this topic. The articles that I read on the net pointed out that contrary to the assertion there were units on Christianity, etc.
Is this the same issue as that other thread? I thought that was someplace in California not in Tennessee? My guess is that it is the same type of issue though. The OP would have everyone believing that public schools are forcing all American students to face East 5 times every day for prayer. And unfortunately, there are posters more than willing to jump on that bandwagon. Hence the need for teaching critical thinking and reading.
. . .but she objects to the fact that the history unit didn’t devote similar time to Christianity or Judaism
from snopes:
"Dr. Jan Hanvey, Maury County Public Schools middle school supervisor, told the Columbia Daily Herald that while students spend about three weeks learning about the geography and culture of the middle east, they only spend about one day talking about Islam. Furthermore, Hanvey said that the Chritianity was not "skipped," as some publications have suggested. . ."
"This isn't the first time that a course on Islam has been misrepresented as a government sanctioned indoctrination in the Islamic faith. A series of fear mongering articles have been penned since 2001 claiming that public schools were forcing Islam onto students. In January 2015, several web sites reported that a Boston Public School was forcing students to recite a prayer which would "officially convert them to Islam."
While these stories typically involve a smidgen of truth (many public schools do teach world history and therefore touch on multiple religions), it is inaccurate to say that these lessons are being taught in an attempt to convert children to Islam"
Lets not turn a blind eye to this getting into our schools. Yes it should be a part of history, but reciting prayers and spending over 3 weeks on the topic in school is just overboard. Even the parent in the fox news interview says they skipped right over the other religions in the class and then SPENT 3 WEEKS on islam.. NO STUDENT SHOULD HAVE TO STUDY ANY PRAYERS regarding the faith...
