Hi ,

So my parents are moving from Vancouver to a small town in CT . Vancity's pretty diverse in race and $, but from wikiing Darien ... Is it really as bad as everyone says it is, especially on Urbandictionary? Does everyone really drive their own car , or wear Lily Pulitzer every day , It seems pretty extreme !

I'm going to arrive in late April, so that's kind of going to mess up my school schedule .. I'm in grade 9 right now, and I'll be entering Darien High School . Do they have a volleyball team ? If so, how is it .. Their academics seem pretty good, I'm from a great private school in Vancouver , how do you think the two would compare?

So does Darien have any stores/malls nearby? How is the (Rather infamous , Haha) Darien Sport Shop ? What is there to do in town for teenagers? I'm not really looking to get high or druunk :/
How are the locals ? Friendly ..? I'm pretty well-off but in Darien, IDK.. Do you need to be obscenely wealthy to fit in?

So, any tips for social adjustment + making friends + info on Darien and its surroundings? Also, weird question .. how do you pronounce Darien? Dairy-ehn, or Dairy-anne?

+ my brother wants to know about the nightlife (aha) and my dad wants to know a bit about the commute to NYC from anyone with experience ; how long does it take, is there a train , etc .. thanks againn !

Darien (pronounced Dairy Ann) is one of the nicer more upscale communities in Fairfield County. Darien is not a very diverse town though and it is very wealthy and pretty quiet. I don't think you will need to be obscenely wealthy and I think most people are more conservative and quiet about their wealth. Not everyone drives their own cars to school or wears the latest fashion but there will be some that do.

There is a small downtown area with some shops and restaurants. Stamford is nearby and it is a larger city with stores, restaurants and a major mall. Norwalk is on the other side of Darien and it too has more stores.

I think you need to be open to the change and enjoy the things that make Darien such a nice place to live. Get involved in school activities and try and meet people that have the same interests as you. Darien has a lot of people moving in and out relating to their jobs so I am sure you will be able to make friends. Good luck, Jay

True. It sounds like she'll fit in well in Darien.

To the OP - it's a rich town, but not all that unfriendly. Actually I've found Darienites to be quite friendly and compassionate.

yeah, that would be more fitting .

just because they have money doesnt automatically make me conceited , i know that they worked hard for it. and we're not even that wealthy, we'd probably be like below-average at darien, if that ..

@ kidyankee : it's nice to hear that they're not as snotty as their reputation claims .. : ) does anyone have experience with their high school though ?

darien is very snobby actually, all of fairfield county is extremely rich but darien is probably the most, it is called the gold coast for a reason. I am also from a very rich town in fairfield county, just not as rich as darien and when we played their school soccer team they called us and our parents hillbillys, very snobby, but if your rich enough to move there you will be fine, very nice school though

I guess down county still hasn't stopped slinging the hillbilly euphemism after all......

I would disagree with that characterization though.
