My nephew has just gotten a job in Torrington and he and my niece-in-law will be moving there soon. (A bit tricky in these "hunkering down" days.) What are nice & safe areas to rent an apartment near Torrington? In town or in what suburbs? He'll be a laboratory manager, has a master's in chemistry, so I'm guessing he'll have a decent but not high salary.

Torrington is itself not dangerous, but it is grungy-looking. Otherwise, try Harwinton, Burlington or Litchfield, but I am not sure how many apartments there are in those areas. If he has to go further away, try Canton, Avon or Farmington.

Probably easiest to rent in Torrington itself. Watertown and Thomaston would be the next closest towns with rental inventory, both will be less expensive than Canton, Avon, or Farmington.

Here's a tip: look for a place with natural gas heat rather than electric heat. Natural gas will be cheaper and more comfortable. Parts of Torrington have natural gas and other parts do not. I think the east side is more likely to have natural gas.

Most areas of Torrington are OK. The least desirable area would be the South End. There are many apartment buildings and multi-family houses for rent. If your nephew rents for 1 year he will be able to become familiar with the area and maybe choose one of the nicer, neighboring towns.
