Seems like it's only those areas. For example, people from Shippan say they're from Stamford.

From what I can see, some ways a local community becomes more recognized is:

1. Have its own Zip code (for instance, Cos Cob is 06807)
2. Have its own train station
3. Be a generally nice or exclusive area that people are proud to be from (Shippan Point)
4. Have some official local government from the state like a borough in Connecticut or a village in New York and Vermont.
5. Be a location of something famous - for instance King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. KOP, an unincorporated area, is far better known then the townships its in (Upper Merion) because of the huge KOP mall.

IMO the only time they can get away with this is if it’s a different zip code. Otherwise, it’s snobbery.

Don’t forget Southport residents don’t say they from Fairfield

Bingo. I would even go further to say that Cos Cob is a nice (although the not the most exclusive section) of Greenwich -- a very nice town. Southport is similarly a nice part of Fairfield, although Sasco Hill, Greenfield Hill and parts of the Beach are no slouches in that department either.

As for Rowayton, I guess they have a right differentiate from Norwalk. Similarly, I wouldn't be surprised if Black Rock did the same with Bridgeport. Both are urban areas with rougher parts.

However with Greenwich and Fairfield, the same consideration doesn't apply. It's like someone from Darien pointing out that they are from Tokeneke - big deal, all of Darien is nice.

No. It is not.

It is, however, all about INSECURITIES.

Living there is a different matter, which may, or may not, be about Status...

I don’t think they are mutually exclusive...

To play devil's advocate: how is it insecure for someone from Southport to say they're from there? It's a different zip code and train station, as well as a different vibe all together.
