Unfortunately they should have asked these questions before the merger was approved. Jay

Is anybody else shocked to see a state that used to have so many top companies and white collar jobs slowly slipping into the Amazon warehouse capital of the northeast. So many jobs listed in CT are now just warehouse and delivery driving jobs. It must be a scary time for recent college grads looking to stay in the area. Our cost of living is very high and politicians are touting the high paying $15 an hour jobs as viable. CT needs to change things in leadership in Hartford. 40 + years of a Democrat controlled legislature has given us this economy and dim future. Covid money will disappear and taxes will be raised to pay for so many freebies. We have turned into a sanctuary state and welfare state. Never any talk of cutting the waste from programs and trying to attract people to our state that want to contribute to our economy. Retirees are leaving for low tax states with cheaper housing. Starting to feel like a sucker for staying here and not looking for a new place.

Connecticuts economy appears to be almost fully recovered from the Covid pandemic with high job growth in the hospitality industry. We were No. 12 in Gross Domestic Product growth in the first quarter of 2022. A notch below Massachusetts and well ahead of New York. Thats impressive considering we are among the top five states for GDP already. Jay

Not shocked at all because much of what you say is just is not true. First those warehouse jobs are NOT replacing higher paying jobs. Studies discussed here show that warehousing jobs are actually replacing brick and mortar retail jobs which are dropping nationally. That’s good for our state actually.

Second, I have been hearing claims of doom and gloom of the Connecticut economy for all of the 15 years I’ve been on this forum, yet that hasn’t happened at all. We are still in the Top Five for Gross Domestic Product per capita and our unemployment rate is close to 4% which is generally considered to be full employment. With our continued being No. 1 in personal income and Disposable Income, you can’t really say “the end is near”. Not even close.

As for cutting waste from our state budget, I think that has pretty much already been done despite all the political rhetoric we hear as the election approaches. I say that because a few prominent Republicans have publicly said so and the Republicans have failed to propose an alternative budgets for the past two years now. As also has been noted here before our state budget has continually been posting record surpluses, record Rainy Day Fund and our advanced payments toward future pension obligations actually make our state’s future pretty promising.

Some retirees leaving our state has pretty much been happening for decades now. For some it is to seek out a lower cost area to live in but the primary reason is to seek warmer weather. I will also point out that our state is eliminating income taxes on up to $100,000 in retirement income for couples and $75,000 for individuals. In addition I think you better check real estate prices again. As we’ve noted on this forum the days of home prices being significantly less than our state are long gone. These coupled with our very high standard of healthcare and social services kind of make staying here for retirement, like the vast majority of Connecticut retirees, clearly the better option. Jay

Retirees leave? since when? says who?
Corps are pouring into Stamford by the month.
CT undocs and middle class are driving TRD Pros and Can Am Spiders.
There is no greater sanctuary state(s) on the planet right now than FL and SC. It's not even close. The southern border has become a pipeline to FL and SC. The Governors, Breezes, Lennar, Toll Bros, Horton all demand it.
The State doesn't have to do anything to attract people. As more knives plunge into backs in NYC, they do all the heavy lifting for CT. Free advertising.

Massive income & wealth gaps may be the cause of the high crime rating:

I've never seen poor in CT because my investments are along the coastal area, where the cost of housing are too high. I suppose they are inland and in the larger cities. The only other places I've been in CT are near the NY border when I was with ups & ge, & those areas were very affluent...no poor people there.

Affluent retirees require very little gov't resources. They are cheap to have around, & they pay taxes on unearned incomes & property taxes. Retirees are a profitable demo to keep around for towns, & cities, & states. They volunteer a lot too.
