If you read what I wrote it was not just one comment from one person. He is a respected New York journalist and has heard this attitude from multiple people in his industry over the years. Jay

Connecticut is treated as fairly as any other state by the media.

Media bias is mainly a political thing, and a just last 20 years thing, btw.

15% of FFC works in NYC and is disproportionately prosperous, but Lowell Weicker was correct in pointing out the 2 Connecticuts, and we do also have dire poverty in our cities, which coupled with high COL make it harder still on these people, and our lack of job growth means there is no entry level employment step available to them, in thousands of cases.

That is why btw, I support a casino in Bridgeport, which will be an inconvenience driving, but is the best hope that city has, to escape from its multiple decades long economic plight of much of its population. A casino there will not benefit me, but not being a NIMBY fan, I want all representatives, including towns like Milford, to vote solely for the greater good of all. NIMBY btw has caused massive Ct problems. I still view us as ONE state, and a Ct representative from Milford as a Ct rep, not a Milford rep. It sickened me 20 plus years ago that a Ct rep from Milford cast the deciding vote against the casino, IMO to protect Milford Jai Alai owners who IMO he was too cozy with, and this came after Wynn guaranteed jobs to all Jai Alai employees. Bridgeport needs a boost. This is a great opportunity. I dread Eastern Ct's economy w/o casinos the last 20 years.
As I have posted before, pretty much all of Connecticut has affluence. EVERY county in the state has a median household income and median family income that is higher than the US median. Also, the per capita income of every county except Windham is above the US per capita. And before you mention cost of living, except for Fairfield County, the rest are not a lot more expensive to live in than other places around the country. Jay

I doubt our urban poor find much comfort in suburban wealth.

Per salary.com, all of our counties are significantly more expensive than most of the nation. The FFC/NHC gap is simply far larger.

One example: $50k Hartford = $40,566 Jacksonville, Fl, or about a 18.9% gap.

Stamford 50k = 33k Jacksonville.

A Bridgeport casino can be a game changer. Bass Pro Shop is not a game changer.

CT does have affluence but it’s certainly not everywhere. New Haven County has a household income of 66k, while the US median household income is 57k. A difference of 15%. Cost of living in New Haven County, according to Sperling, is 15% higher than the national average. I’d say that’s very relative.

Wish I could rep you. Consistently logical, well thought out posts.

Hope you are enjoying your new region, btw.

A major announcement coming from Yale and New Haven: https://www.nhregister.com/news/arti...t-13804519.php

I think this will accelerate the (mostly positive) developments happening downtown.

You are conveniently comparing Connecticut to some of the lowest cost areas of the country. Even worse, you are trying to compare our most expensive area to one of the lowest. How is that fair or reasonable?

Those low cost areas also come with lower incomes. Duvall County where Jacksonville is located, has a median household income of $49,463 which is under the US median household income of $51,914 and significantly less than even the lowest county median household income in Connecticut which is Windham at $59,340.

As for the urban poor, last time I looked every city has urban poor, even Jacksonville. At least here in Connecticut they have access to social services and decent education opportunities. Jay

That Bass Pro Shop brings a lot of suburbanites to Bridgeport who otherwise would not shop in the city. It also brings a lot of tax dollars in as well as provide jobs to Bridgeport residents. A casino would be nice but we should not negate the good Bass Pro Shop building in Bridgeport has done. Jay
