<sigh> I guess I should jog over to Big Y and pick up some more canned fruit, and maybe a bag of charcoal. We have some, but not much.

I don't know if this makes it "better" (probably barely if at all) but it's obvious it shifted south a bit as the immediate NYC area and FFC were in the "green" on this NHC map last night:

You're right; I saw the update a little while ago. I work in the financial services industry, and if it weren't for the banking side of my job (moving money around for clients), I wouldn't even bother going to work today! I did update the "closures" thread in NYC, but forgot about this one.

I awoke today to the shocking news that Sandy now has a 946 mb/27.97 central pressure and the sustained winds are near 85- 90 mph. Sandy is now going over the warmest SST in the Gulf Stream, so hopefully there will be no further strengthening.

Everyone is likely as ready as their going to get in the Tri-State area.

From the 8:00 am NWS obs, it looks like sustained tropical storm force winds (40 – 74 mph) are not far off the south shore of Long island. Westhaphton is reporting sustained winds of 29 – mph and gusts to 40 mph. So I think as we push though this morning sustained tropical storm force winds will overspread much of Long Island and southern Connecticut. So far we have power down here on the beach in the Lymes/Southeast CT….but the lights are flickering. So I don’t know for how much longer.

At this point I really fear the storm surge building toward the coastlines. The deep barometric pressure (now even lower) builds a rising dome of sea water that will surge across the coastal plain. If you live less than 10 feet above MSL (mean sea level) the course of least regret is to move to higher ground. If you decide to stay, MAKE SURE YOU KEEP TAPS ON YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE AND CAN DRIVE TO HIGHER GROUND.

Trying to keep the hype down (but prudent warning up)…this has the potential to be the greatest storm surge from a hurricane in Connecticut and Long Island since 1938.
