Columbia openings:

1) Moxy Hotel opening across from the statehouse

2) Bierkeller brewey opening at canalside

3) Peak Drift brewery, by far city’s largest, opening on North Main

4) Bullstreet coming of age (iron hill brewery opening, getting above 1200 residents)

5) Korean restaurant opening main (from owners of 929 kitchen)
All of them together will provide a big boost in traction.

I’d probably go with Bierkeller just because I feel like developing the river front is the biggest need for Columbia. I really wish the Canal Side/ Sola Station development was more accessible via bike or walking to the Vista. Hopefully once the canal is repaired it will become a more walkable area.

One thing not on your list I hope to see in 2023 is the housing developments on North Main to show progress. I noticed the Jim Moore site finally changed hands in October and between that development, Benton Crossing and the Veteran Apartments there should be a influx of residents to the area that should assist with the redevelopment of North Main between Elmwood and Sunset. That area could also see some spill over benefits with the Bull Street population increasing as well.

I’m saddened to learn that Columbia City Councilman Joe Taylor, 64, just passed away.

Huge loss for the City and its chances of becoming more economically competitive. I tend to watch a lot of council meetings and it was refreshing to have someone on there with new ideas and didn’t do things because “that’s the way we’ve always done it”. I wonder if a former councilman and state rep who has a lot of free time on his hands will seek to fill Taylor’s vacant seat.

Looks like Ben Arnold’s new plan for his former convention center development is two hotels and a 145 unit apartment complex. The site plan is on Januarys planning commission agenda.

I mean it's only a waste in comparison to what was proposed, which based on numbers couldn't have been delivered without massive subsidies (parking garage, convention center expansion). The apartments add more density to the Vista and the hotels, even if they're not huge, add even more capacity. I see this as a win for now.

Agreed, his original proposal was extremely one sided and put all the risk on the City/County. Beyond that it would financially hamstring the municipalities from doing any other large projects for the foreseeable future. And there is no guarantee that event participation would increase at the rate Arnold proposed. Empty hotels near an underutilized convention center would not benefit the citizens of Columbia or Richland County in any way.
