Colorado coronavirus cases cross 27,000, as hospitalizations continue to fall

https://www.denverpost.com/2020/06/0...tinue-to-fall/

"Hospitalizations in Colorado from the new coronavirus continued to fall Wednesday, as case counts crossed the 27,000 line.

The Colorado Hospital Association reported 261 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of Wednesday, the lowest level seen since late March. The number of people in Colorado hospitals with COVID-like symptoms, but no diagnosis yet, was 127. Those cases “under investigation” have bounced between 100 and 130 since late May.

So far, the state has recorded 27,060 cases and 4,443 total hospitalizations, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. That means about 16% of those known to have the virus needed hospital-level care."

The key metric is hospitalizations. The number of infections has little meaning without mass testing and the fact that many carriers are asymptomatic.

Watch hospitalizations as we proceed during this summer. Hopefully, this virus will peter out due to hotter, drier air and UV exposure due to Colorado high altitudes.

I hope you're right but there are currently multiple large outbreaks here in the SLV where it's plenty high, dry, and warm. 80+ degree days, very low humidity, and average elevation of 7500ft, but the cases have grown exponentially over the past two weeks in Alamosa and Center. If trends continue here in Saguache County we'll soon have the highest number of cases per capita in the state.

I'll be watching to see how things change here regarding new cases. We just returned to our summer home in Buena Vista, and we are in the very large minority of those wearing masks. I've been very surprised to see that in some stores not even clerks are wearing masks. My husband and I are both in the high risk category (being in our 70s), and we use our disinfectant wipes on everything we touch, including stuff we buy in the stores. What can't be wiped is washed.

Today at Mr. K's on the highway in BV (popular hamburger place) I saw a lot of people standing around waiting for their orders. No masks and no social distancing. Are these the tourists arriving in our small town, now that the ban on short term rentals has been lifted? I keep hearing about all the precautions, but I don't see people taking any.

Colorado’s COVID-19 hospitalizations fall to new post-peak low amid lull in death reports

https://www.denverpost.com/2020/06/0...deaths-june-7/

"Coronavirus hospitalizations continue to fall and no new deaths associated with COVID-19 were reported by state health officials Sunday.

The total number of people who’ve tested positive for or are suspected to have contracted the new coronavirus climbed past 28,000 on Sunday with the addition of 153 new cases to the state’s tally, with 4,455 additional people tested.

There was no change Sunday to either the number of people whose deaths have been directly attributed to COVID-19 (1,274) or the number of people who had COVID-19 and died, but their deaths may or may not have been due to the virus (1,527).

That, however, does not mean nobody in Colorado died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. There’s a lag in reporting deaths, particularly those whose deaths are ruled to have been directly caused by the coronavirus.

And while a day or two can pass with no new deaths reported, they’re often followed by a jump in fatalities as they’re eventually reported to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Nevertheless, deaths have been trending downward — as have hospitalizations. According to the latest data available, only 207 coronavirus patients remained hospitalized on Saturday, a new low following the April peak during which more than 200 people were being hospitalized every day.

To date, a total of 4,485 people have been hospitalized in Colorado since early March due to the virus.

The number of confirmed outbreaks also remained unchanged from Saturday at 299. At least 65 of the state’s outbreaks are considered resolved."

The key metric is hospitalizations. The downtrend is encouraging.

Colorado 'warily watching' neighboring states after coronavirus spikes

https://gazette.com/news/colorado-wa...6eb254200.html

"Gov. Jared Polis said Colorado is "warily watching Utah and Arizona," both of which have seen "substantial" upticks in coronavirus cases in the past week.

Polis made the comments at a Tuesday afternoon coronavirus press conference.

While Colorado has yet to see such a rise in cases, "it just shows how tenuous this progress is," he said. "Coronavirus isn't going away. The minute we're not vigilant, there will be a resurgence of cases."

More than a dozen states are recording their highest averages of new COVD-19 cases since the pandemic began, reports The Washington Post, and hospitalizations in at least nine states have been on the rise since Memorial Day.

In Texas, the state’s seven-day average of new cases has increased in 10 of the past 15 days, according to The Washington Post. Texas has reported 75,616 cases since the pandemic started.

Polis gave updated COVID-19 diagnosis and fatality numbers for Colorado: 28,339 diagnoses and nearly 1,300 deaths. Eleven of the last 14 days have seen a downward trend in hospitalizations, he said. But only half of the last 14 days have seen a downward trend in new cases, he added, calling the later results "more mixed."

The state will be getting more than 800 contact tracers via the AmeriCorps VISTA summer associates program, said Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera, who attended the conference remotely. More information on the program can be found here.

The state is not currently experiencing a shortage of personal protective equipment, but "that doesn't mean we wouldn't always appreciate more," which is why the state is continually purchasing such equipment, Polis said.

He encouraged Coloradans who've recently participated in protests to get a "free, quick and easy" coronavirus test 7-10 days after. The state's list of free community-based testing sites can be found here.

"Loving thy neighbor, that is how we'll get through this stronger than ever before," Polis said."

The outside world might be going to crap, but Colorado honestly seems to be doing its best to form a bulwark. It’s bizarre that stockpiling PPE, hiring contact tracers, and free testing have become political issues for some people, but it’s reassuring that current leadership is preparing for a second wave.
