I'm thinking of getting a Hot Pot for a gift for a college student, but I wonder what would be best?

With limited space, I don't want to get anything that isn't really useful. Of course, he'll have a fridge.

By hot pot do you mean Crock pot? Neither of my kids wanted to take the extra one I have here when they lived in the dorm. They ate their regular meals at the dining halls.

What they did appreciate was a coffee pot, and a smallish microwave.

A microwave and mini fridge are probably the best appliances.

Does he know where he is going to college yet? If not, don't buy any appliances yet. Every school has their own policies on what is and is not allowed and some don't allow any extra appliances other than a fridge.

^Yep, most of the places my kid looked at didn't allow plug in appliances that were meant to be plugged in and left to heat up, so no hot plates/burners, coffee makers, hot pots, crock pots, candle warmers, etc

Not allowed at the schools my kids went to.

Microwave and fridge, as many have said before me.

Small microwave.

We were not allowed anything with a heating element. Small-size fridges could be rented, and some models were a combo dorm-sized fridge with small microwave on top. I always rented the little fridge, but bought my own microwave. I used that microwave for a full ten years after I graduated, too.

No, it's a pot that heats water super fast. I'm told it's essential for the ever present Ramen noodles, any other food you add water to, and cocoa or tea.

I agree it would be smart to wait and see how strict the guidlines are.

No, not yet. Probably Cincinnati, but not sure. Most of his cousins went there, so I'm thinking they suggested a hot pot.
