My husband has been called for a potential civil service job. Can anyone tell me about the area? We are in VA Beach and it seems the hurricanes usually hit down there and we get collateral damage. How bad is it in actuality? How are the schools? I am a RN; what would the potential job situation be like? What are good areas? How is the real estate market?? Thanks!

I'm moving to Jax next month for a civilian job. I used to live in Portsmouth, VA. I would say that the areas look similar in terms of the terrain.

Where the hurricane hit last time may not be where it goes next but all of the coastal areas are at risk of course. If you look at the historical hurricane track maps, Hurricane Evacuation Zone Maps-State Hurricane History (http://www.csc.noaa.gov/hez_tool/history.html - broken link) NC doesn't look too bad compared to Florida. If you are looking to get scared off, the hurricane storm surge maps for Onslow County ought to do it - Onslow County Storm Surge Inundation Maps (http://www.hurricanetrack.com/ncstormsurge/onslow.html - broken link). I looked for the flood maps but I can't find them at the moment.

I can't speak to the schools. Check out the Jacksonville Daily News online Jacksonville Daily News to get the skinny on the job and real estate situations.

As an RN, you should be able to find work anywhere.

Best of luck to you.

I've been looking at real estate on realtor.com web site. Does the real estate market up there stink or is that a misperception? I found mostly newer housing, no trees on the lot...anyone????

Jacksonville area is one of the hottest in the state. Yes, ots of new homes and subdivisions. There are plenty of resales also.

On new homes, Ive seen sellers offering up to $6,000 towards a buyers closing costs. Alot of resales offer incentives also.

If you have any more specific questions, let me know...

Thank you all for responding. I didn't find anything favorable on the schools or real estate so my husband passed up the opportunity. Best wishes!
