First and foremost: I'm thrilled that it's absolutely looking like SW will be: a) staying in Cleveland, and b) downtown Cleveland.

That said, I'm a little disappointed it's looking like it may not be Public Square. I want so bad for that horrible surface lot hole to disappear from Cleveland's central living room. Also I really have confidence SW has the political and financial umph to not only move on their project quickly, but to get it done right with a majestic tower to finish the 4 Public Square skyscrapers ringing the Square, ... and complete the 30-year dream of the tower that was robbed from us when, then Society Bank, took down Ameritrust which was ready to put shovels in the ground...

And like many of the urban ohio posters, I have very little confidence that the County will move quickly or effectively in building their new courthouse tower on the Square. It would welcome it, of course, as I would most any project to finally close up the Square, but I would also have to believe a new courthouse tower (absent the jail) would have ground-level retail along the Square -- an added plus.

But again, THE most important thing is that it appears SW is staying in downtown. If they do, in fact choose Bedrock's riverfront location, this would finally complete the Van Sweringen's 90-year dream to complete the Terminal Tower/Union Station complex. Even though 30-year-old Tower City went a long way toward upgrading the TT/US footprint making it both more viable and attractive, it is still the ugly side of Tower City, with those awful steel beams sticking out over the old station/RR track area-turned-TC parking lot (I've always felt SW's current Landmark office HQ -- formerly Midland/Guildhall/(I forget the 3rd building) -- seemed very Kremlin-esque as viewed from the south). Even though this plan would pretty much deep-6 any plans to expand the casino (we see that Dan Gilbert/Jack is selling the property now anyway to enter a sale-leaseback), finally completing Tower City and infusing it with 3,000+ more workers (combining with SW's 2,000 there, now, plus around 1,000 more coming in from other locations), would equal somewhere around 6,600 workers right at the Square! Whopee!

30+ years of empty lots and now there's competition for them between SW, a Fortune 500 company, and friggin' corrupt Cuyahoga County. A family friend and SW employee said the HDQ was supposed to go on PS but ran into ''red tape'' about going in there now. Not sure what the final decision is or will be though. The PS/WHD has been SW favored location since it began HDQ development mid-decade but delayed due to the Valspar acquisition.

If SW wants those PS/WHD lots the county better back off, otherwise we'll get an out of the way SW HDQs in the flats and years more of vast emptiness in CLE's core CBD. SW will be turning dirt in 2020 and open by 2023; the county's plans are open ended as there are no definite plans ie. years to a decade.

I sure hope SW puts a new tower on PS with its R&D center on at least the south 1/2 of the Weston lots (Superior-Frankfort/W 3- W6). PS is a prominent location for SW than hidden away riverfront/Flats location. Put a new courthouse on the north 1/2 of the Weston lots if it has to go near this area. A new PS courthouse will be dead by 5:15 pm and lawyers can hoof it or take a free trolley; all the big firms used to be clustered around E9/Euclid and I don't recall a lot of sqwuaking about the distance to the current JC.

The southern half of the Hippodrom lots along Prospect could work as well and it's near the current county HDQ building or the vacant lot/s on the east side of W 9th Street in the WHD. Even the flats/riverfront land that SW is considering; strike a deal and build it around this area adjacent to the federal courthouse and close by to the state of ohio building. All have excellent connections to the TC transit hub.
,
SW already owns 9+ acres on the riverfront and may want to be a part of this CityBlock project, or not. 1.8 million sf of new commercial construction is massive and belongs on PS/WHD. The collateral spin-off from this location will be immense. Down by the river, not so much.

It's easy to walk around downtown and not have any clue Sherwin is there. I highly doubt a visitor would notice. At Public Square, everyone would know, and I think that would be a good thing. Sherwin is a legacy institution and is truly a part of Cleveland identity. Sherwin needs to be associated with Cleveland way more strongly than it is. People think Goodyear, they think Akron, Detroit- the big 3, Minneapolis - Target. Cleveland should be much more strongly related to Sherwin. A Public Square location would do that.

Agreed. Is there even a Sherwin Williams paint store downtown? If not, there should be, especially with all the new construction and renovations going on there. Maybe they should even make it a test store where they display their latest products that are still being consumer tested (similar to the Smucker's store by the headquarters in Orrville).

Like the RTA rail system, SW is invisible to those not in the know about what's in downtown CLE.

Wonder what the one site in the suburb was/is. Rockside? Pinecrest? Chagrin Highlands? Westlake (close to CEO's Bay Village home.) Probably doesn't matter, I'm pretty convinced downtown's central location makes the most sense - by far. And I hope Eaton has regrets - as they should.
