Just because it doesn't fit your stereotypical view of what a Southern city is doesn't mean it isn't one.
Yes, it does, because it isn't just my view, it's the shared, collective perception of the city by the majority of people, including most southerners. We all know what a Southern city is, and Miami ain't it. If you think it is, you should probably get your head checked.

You are exactly right on both counts - DC is Northeastern and Miami is not a Southern city, but be ready or a lot of denial of both of those by southerners, they will swarm you here.

As well they should. DC, despite how hard it wishes to be, is NOT a NE city.
Miami is a Southern city, whether people from the NE like to admit it or not. It isn't "Southern denial" at all, think of it as a well needed geography lesson. I know Miami gets a "pass" from people who otherwise hate the South because many from your region happen to like the place. It does not change reality.
Ask a native Dade Countian if Miami is Southern or not.

Are the rural towns in NY considered southern/or the south since they dont typically fit the stereotype or characteristics of what most consider to be NY?
And why does this only occur with southern cities? No one tries to put any other regions cities into a totally separate region.
The difference between Miami and DC is that people of Miami at least acknowledge the fact that they are southern and located in the south. People in DC think they are far and above both the south and NE. Culturally; they are more similar to the NE than the south. However, geographically they are located in the south.

The odd thing is Philadelphia is only 11 miles north of the Mason Dixon line
just watched a show on it - one main intent at the time was to seperate Philadelphia from Baltimore - DC was still pretty swampy
