I agree with infamous, NY hot dogs and NY Pizza are unique
Just looking at your screen name I can see why you agree. A NY hotdog is plain with just ketchup, while a Chicago hotdog has more on it which makes it better IMO.

Sauerkraut or onions in tomato sauce. Besides the street vendors, there is also Nathans at Coney Island. I had those as a kid LONG BEFORE they packaged them for national sale. They grilled those back then. I like them with mustard and sauerkraut as a kid, and their krinkle thick fries are wonderful. Even the bun was not your typical bun. It was more like bread and split at the top. They put that on the grill too and they came out sorta krispy.
it's one thing if we were only comparing the hot dogs of nyc proper vs. chicago proper. in that case, i'd have to give the edge to chicago, although it's really not an apples-to-apples comparison.
but if you allow the hot dogs of northern new jersey to be added to the discussion, then the nyc area might get the upper hand. i say this as someone who has tried a number of the top spots in chicago during my visits to the city (and enjoyed most of them) as well as most of the best places in northern nj, which is a stone's throw from nyc (for example, rutt's hut is only 10 miles west of times square).
northern nj specializes in the "ripper", aka a deep-fried hot dog, which is difficult to find in nyc proper. the only eatery i know of that serves it is crif dogs on st. marks place in manhattan's east village - and that place was founded by a north jersey guy who grew up eating at rutt's hut.
north jersey also has the italian hot dog, which was created in newark and, to this day, is pretty much only available in the garden state, mainly within a 5-7 mile radius of the brick city. i have never seen an italian hot dog on a menu in nyc proper, even though downtown manhattan is only 9 miles from downtown newark.
and then there's the texas wiener, which is actually not from texas, but rather paterson, nj (17 miles northwest of midtown manhattan).
i'm willing to bet that most longtime residents of nyc proper, long island, westchester, and so forth - much less people across the nation - aren't even aware of north jersey's hot dog culture. but the truth is, north jersey can make a strong claim as having the best and most variety of hot dogs in the northeast (far better than nyc proper IMO), and is a contender for the best dogs in the country.
