I think Oakland is in a more optimistic position than most of the cities on that list because it is located in a very prosperous region. Also, parts of Oakland are very upscale. It is primarily East Oakland which is really ghetto. West Oakland and the Oakland Hills are pretty nice.

Oakland isn't a city where blanket statements about the regions are particularly accurate, but I don't know where in Oakland you visited that you came away with the idea that West Oakland is the nicer side of town.

LOL WHAT??! West Oakland is like the worst part of Oakland in appearance and one of the worst in crime!
Kind of akin to an informal Galveston Kappa Beach Party, but in the middle of town. Just imagine 30 cars and dozens of youngsters packed in the Wal-Mart parking lot on Westheimer and Dunvale, complete with loud music, car "stunts", dancing, women, video cameras and all manner of shenanigans.
Hmmm, sounds like my college buddies and I on Thursday night , on the beach in Puerto Rico during the 1970's...can't be that bad, we all survived to cut our hair, get 9-to-5's and become middle-aged.
Atlanta may love hip hop but what major city doesn't, Atlanta is home to the fastest growing millionaire population in the country it also has the most black millionaires, the second richest majority black county in the nation, and just the fact that it is the fastest growing metro in the nation for the past 9 years and if it was that ghetto why would people continue to move here, just because Atlanta has a large black population doesn't make it ghetto actually it has a very affluent black population with over half being upper middle class.
True, the recent spurt of urban gentrification by whites and yuppie blacks has gotten the thugs of Southside and the Six Flags area grimacing and grumbling "there goes the neighborhood."
Places like Bridgeport, Connecticut is ghetto (which kinda reminded me of Newark, NJ) LOL its like I dont get it, everytime I go there always the look of dumps. Is the mayor doing anything? I hope it go back to its wonderful victorian beauty it once was... Family Guy even made of B-Port, CT LOL heres the video I just could not stop laughing.
