I though Alaska was pretty Red and conservative state. But guess it not religious?
I'd assume it's more libertarian kind of conservatism kind of like Arizona. The type of Goldwater conservatism that existed before the religious right hijacked the republican party.
Interesting how religious people are. Even New Jersey is more religious than Wyoming and Colorado.
I'm not all that sure about most people really being THAT religious. They were asked how important religion is in their lives, but answering "yes" doesn't necessarily mean that they are ultra-religious or that they even attend church regularly. Religion is important in my life, for example, because my family was involved in church when I was growing up...but I haven't seen the inside of a church in a minute or two.
I expected the south.. if you ever watch the christian channel, all the "P.o. box etc" always is a southern state, and usually the host person has a southern accent.
I would think the pacific NW was the least religious.. but i guess that goes for the northern north east.
I live in the South and i'm not surprised that most people thought that religion was important in their lives. But that in no way means that they actually live out what they claim to believe. People here still get drunk, do drugs, and have premarital sex just like the rest of the country. Most people I know dont go to church regularly. Memphis is supposedly not in the Bible Belt because a lot of ppl here dont go to church. But whenever I ask people who are from small Southern towns if they consider their town to be in the Bible Belt they usually say "No, that's the next town over" I dont think the Bible Belt really exists. It's probably not a Belt, maybe a scattering of small areas.

Wow, when the Rapture comes the South is really going to empty out. They don't call it the Bible Belt for nothing.
I'm frankly surprised that Utah wasn't on this list...it was the first state that came to my mind.

The religious right never hijacked the Republican Party, if they had Huckabee or Romney would have won the primaries in landslides... Instead, the Moderate, John McCain won, and by an enormous margin.
The stereotype of Republicans as the party of the religious right was created by the Democrats in response to the accusations of Socialism by Republicans. If you buy into it, you are no better than either side that started the lies.

Not until I left the south did I even KNOW that there were people who were "conservative" that were NOT fundamentalist Christian nutjobs.
But then I moved to Chicago and realized that conservative doesn't always equal religious right. In fact, my boss is a republican and she's Jewish and could actually care less about structured religion.
