I'm orginally from the East Coast and I'm gonna say, L.A hands down. Boston has 500,000 people L.A has over 3 million. Boston weather is horrible, L.A weather is amazing. L.A has beaches, Boston has annoying accents.
Boston seems great until you go there. It has to be the most homogeneous major city that I've visited. I really wanted to vote Boston, because I simply don't like those suburban cities like LA as much as I do what I consider to be real cities. I think that Boston is the only major NE eastern major city that I would choose LA over.
People moving from LA to Phoenix might be considering the living cost. For Boston and LA, the living cost are both high, so they are comparable. I think we should admit that most people outside city-data don't care about density and public transportation. I do, but most people don't. They love to drive around and to find parking lots everywhere they go. Density is not the only way of living. And, believe it or not, driving is still a lot more efficient than public transportation nowadays, even considering traffic. I just got back from a visit from Boston, using MBTA from Logan aiport to the MFA costs nearly an hour. If you drive, it is probably 15 minutes. I think that constant difference makes driving and a less dense layout equally attractive.

The international comparison here is LA = Mexico City and Boston = Prague or Vienna. Gee I wonder which is a better place to live!
I Love Boston's history..
But nowhere near as much of a city as LA
Boston is a city i really admire being from California.
I would love to go there some day, But LA is far larger.
LA makes me biased i guess from entertainment and nightlife.
I think that for me, LA is the better place to be because:
1. I grew up watching Magic Johnson and the Lakers. I was a big Laker fan for a lot of years. I know we lost to Boston in 2008, but if the Lakers and Celtics match up in the Finals in 2010, I think its going to be a Laker victory in 6 games. Kevein Garnett is a solid player that's true but he is not the Kevin Garnett of like 2004 for example. And Rasheed Wallace? He is no doubt the biggest jerk that the NBA has seen since maybe Dennis Rodman. Wallace usually complains to the referees and has a bad temper. He may be talented, but if he acts like a jerk, he could be an issue for the Celtics. I think the Lakers bench is also very solid. Lakers are just the better team. Too many great players, too much depth and with the addition of Ron Artest, the Lakers will be tough to beat.
2. On that note, I also am not a big fan of the Boston Red Sox.
3. Great Mexican food in LA.
4. Better weather in LA
5. LA is closer to Mexico, one of the most beautiful nations on Earth. And very interesting too.
6. My family is here and family is important to me.
These are the list of reasons why I think I'd be happier in LA. I can't think of any more at the moment. LA is a world class city. There's a reason why so many people come here.
It's not an easy choice if we try to make some sort of logic based comparative framework. They are very different cities, and I love them both quite a bit. I voted for L.A. because it has the movie industry which is just completely fascinating, cool, and the great driver of American culture. I grew up in L.A. and have always loved it. I've spent my adult life in Boston, and would not really want to live anywhere else, with the possible exception of L.A. Definitely my two favorite U.S. cities. Probably the only city I've liked more than both would be Paris, which is somewhat of a synthesis of the two.
