To see which method was brought out. Knife related murders could mean more aggression over guns. If City A has 90% of deaths from Guns, versus City B with only 55% of deaths from guns... we need to change how we approach reducing crime between the two cities. They will usually (typically) have very different crime compositions.

Those stats are a lot harder to find as a lot of cities don’t track them. That being said, statistically guns are universally the leading cause of homicides in major city.

Regarding shootings. On average for every person shot and killed in NoLA, two survive. St. Louis & Baltimore are closer to 1:3. DC & Philly are ~1:5, while Chicago is ~1:6.

Because it’s easier to narrow down data if it’s just homicides. Shootings go unreported all the time. For example in my home city of Fort Worth, the local newspaper said there were 388 shootings victims in 2021. However, out all of the data I saw I could only come up with approximately 300. For homicides, they will certainly be reported because it results in atleast one deceased individual. Non-fatal shooting and stabbing data is just hard to keep track of.

Yep. Detroit, DC & Baltimore routinely brush up against 1k non-fatal shootings a year. Philly was north of 2k in 2021. Chicago had 4.4k that same year.

Birmingham (AL) at 3 through January 12th (compared to 8 this time last year).

Way too early to declare this a trend, but fingers crossed...

Two homeless people were murdered in Miami, I think that brings it up to 5 for the year.

Week 1 of 2023 was posted by the Atlanta PD on their website, and as of 1/7 it had 0. Not sure about the second week but I haven't heard of any.
