How was "most important city" defined? Because if we went by GDP, population and other measures, many of these cities wouldn't crack the top 21.

The "real" world is a LOT different than the CD world. Some cities that are adored on this site, are not even a small part of most of the world's thought process. That's my opinion, but I believe it's true. The real world doesn't have boosters of certain cities or metros; doesn't have those with an ax to grind; doesn't care if someone is completely in love with their city. There are cities on this site over-represented, and those under-represented by posters. Those over-represented get more accolades, that may not bear out in the real world.

See my post, #16, it doesn't actually say "21 most important cities" at all, just 21 large metros... OP added the "most important" part.

The list is very subjective. There is definitely more objectivity in a list (discussed in a different thready nearby) based on the people voting with their money. That is, the least affordable places can be considered the most desirable/attractive. Here's the list itself:

1. NYC
2. SF
3. LA
4. MIA
5. Long Island
6. Orange county
7. NJ (NYC metro)
8. SJ
9. Ventura county
10. SEA

Sorry it was on another article covering the same topic however. If you go down and find the M live site you will see where it says that.

Matterfact ill just send you a link: Poll shows Detroit is the most unpopular city in America | MLive.com

According to new stats from Public Policy Polling, Detroit is the least popular of the 21 most important cities in the United States. The pollers, who surveyed 900 Americans over April 12-15, found Seattle and Portland were the most widely-appreciated urban areas in the nation.
I decided to post the original article on here since it had the list of cities and wasn't so focused on Detroit.

Well we found the source of the issue, it is Ms. Ashley at M Live who messed it up! The Public Policy Polling survey that she is quoting just says, "21 prominent cities."
