500? At this rate it'll be over 700. They busted a bunch of gang leaders the past year or so and now all these lower level teenagers are running stupid shooting each other left and right cause there's no leadership to stop them. Murders and shootings up almost 60%, most of them in select areas per usual, but overall violent and property crime down over 10%. Blatant gang wars.

I hope this is a typo. If not, Chicago has some problems. Even New York doesn't have 100 yet.

The gangs have gone crazy the past few months. That's a huge increase - up 60% as of April 1st. Up 153% in the past month compared to a year ago. Yes the weather was nice, but the number of shootings and teenagers killing each other in certain areas is crazy. I'm amazed at how little attention it's getting or the reaction from people. As long as 90% of it happens in certain bad areas and it's just them going after each other it passes under the radar except when you look at stats or venture down to those areas to talk to the poor people who are caught up in it all. There have been a few high profile instances of people caught in the cross fire that really makes the news.

The mayor and police chief are going to have to really make a stand against this, horrible for the citizens in those areas and embarassing for the city itself. I'm sure this will be in the press when the NATO summit happens next month and people realize more have died in Chicago so far this year than die in many countries with 10 times the population.

It also scares people away from visiting who don't realize that tourists and "normal" people going about their day have an extremely small % of even knowing it's happening just 5-7 miles away.

People talk about a "crime wave", but it's not really a crime wave, just shootings between youngsters.

The past two years:

Sexual assault down 16%
Robbery down 13%
Aggravated Battery down 18%
Burglary down 14%
Felony theft down 29%
Total crime down 14%

Shootings and murder that have skyrocketed. Frustrating.

Leaders though? Where they do that at?

Remember that there can be substantial variability in the year-to-year number of murders before a specific date, without actually meaning anything about the change in crime. Just random chance.

Lets organize this thread into two groups, shall we?

1. List the cities with an uptick in crime this year compared to the same time last year.

2. List the cities with decreasing crime this year compared to the same time last year.

Thanks
