I am watching House Hunters and a couple from California has reservations about properties in Huntsville, Alabama because the interiors are "too Southern". I know that, on the surface, some might prefer architecture from one region vs. another but if you are paying a million for a home one might think they can find what they want, somehow.

Southern architecture is very broad. How is the interior "too southern?"

Wow- seriously?...I think this is the point where the realtor should have said to them "I think y'all would be happier with some land. I've got a good ole listing down yonder" and this particular episode should have been changed to "Land Hunters" and the couple could have built a home to their high standards exactly how they wanted it from scratch on their dream piece of vacant land, except they may be concerned that the types of trees on the land are "too southern".

Sometimes I look at the home buyers on House Hunters and wonder how people that seem so flaky and dense (such as being shocked to see southern architecture in Alabama) ever obtained the wealth necessary to afford some of the homes on House Hunters to begin with. I guess that's what makes it entertainment rather than reality.

Is it really Southern or just generic?

As the others pointed out, there's no such thing as "Southern Architecture." Just as there's no such thing as "Northern Architecture." There are so many different styles of architecture in the South that it's impossible to generalize them together.

Personally, the better architectural styles in the South are fantastic, diverse, and fairly wide spread. Sure, each region has some ugly structures, but the South has a lot more good than bad. From the Antebellum and Shot Gun homes near New Orleans, to the Crafstman gems you see in cities like Charlotte, Atlanta, etc. to Victorians in Savannah and Georgian and Greek Revival architecture in Charleston (and so much more) The South has a wide variety of fantastic architectural gems.

That's what I wanted to know. I'm from Ohio, but I like the fact that architecture changes from one part of the country to the other. I think the couple had spent too much time in California.

Oh I know. New Orleans is so rich with architecture (I didn't even touch on the French Quarter and the French and Spanish influences there, Double Galleries, Creole Homes, etc) . I just wanted to mention some other cities (many of which have good Craftsman homes) since the topic was about the South as a whole. I didn't want NO to hog all of the glory!

That home is gorgeous, by the way. Is that along St. Charles Avenue? I think I've seen it.

^No, It's this one (link to google streetview). It is on St. Charles, I knew I've seen it. I may even have a photo on my hard drive.
