Simple question is Atlanta the most "Northeast looking" city in the south? I can't think of any other southern city or sunbelt city that resembles a northeast city as much as ATL. Things to consider:
Housing Stock
Downtown centrally located (though not exclusive to ATL)
Good collection of brick buildings (from what I have seen in pics)
Hilly and green with no palm trees
Heavy Rail transit
Downtown buildings with spires
I have always felt that from afar ATL resembles a more modern version of Philly, the one thing it lacks is proximity to a body of water and obviously many others however from an esthetic point of view what do you guys think?

From pictures and videos I've seen; It does have some strong resemblances to northeastern cities. Some might say New Orleans though.
I was going to say that, but I knew it would start up the DC/Baltimore being southern drama. I don't think neither are southern, but I don't think they are northern either.
Here's Atlanta from a train looking kinda Northeastern. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q91bOusLIE4 You could argue though that if it wasn't for the Palm trees, beaches and warm weather Miami would be the most northeastern looking city simply because of its density.
I think Atlanta is about as northeastern as it gets in the Deep South. Areas like Castleberry Hill and Sweet Auburn, especially.
One other thing in common is that Atlanta is a major immigrant landing point that isn't dominated by one group. Instead, there is fairly equal representation among Latinos, Asians, Caribbean folks, and Africans.
Our top twenty immigration contributors are:
Mexico 8.24% India 6.07% Nigeria 4.81% Korea 4.45% Colombia 3.94% Ethiopia 3.83% Jamaica 3.82% Vietnam 3.71% China 2.92% Pakistan 2.36% Brazil 2.33% Burma 2.30% Bangladesh 2.12% Kenya 2.07% Ghana 1.86% UK 1.66% Philippines 1.44% Liberia 1.40% Peru 1.39% Iran 1.33%
North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia
Ths sort of mix is far closer to a northern metro than a typical sunbelt city. Most big sunbelt metros have 20% or more of their immigrant mix originate from one country or region (Miami's is Cuba; San Diego, Dallas, LA, and Houston is Mexico; San Francisco is about 18% from China, 14% from Philippines).
